Pakistan's population tops 207 million: early census results

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Pakistans population has surged by more than half to 207 million, according to provisional results of the countrys first census in almost two decades released by the statistics board Friday.Once confirmed in the final report, Pakistan could be set to overtake Brazil as the worlds fifth most populous country, according to statistics on the US Census Bureau website.Pakistans Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi praised the work of census officials and called for early completion of the final figures, a statement from his office said. No date has yet been announced for the release.Abbasi also lauded the victims of several attacks targeting census officials, including a bomb blast in Lahore in April which killed at least seven people.Pakistan had not held a census for nearly two decades due to years of bickering by politicians concerned it could redraw the political map, raising fears over power bases and federal funding. The provisional results published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed an average annual growth of 2.4 percent since 1998, when the total population was put at 132.35 million. The updated figure -- an increase of around 57 percent since 1998 -- is higher than the estimate of 200 million that had been in wide use.Central Punjab province remained far and away the most populated, home to more than 110 million people or more than half the country -- but it also showed the slowest average annual growth rate, at 2.13 percent. The areas with the fastest growth rates were restive southern Balochistan province, with a population of more than 12 million and an average growth rate since 1998 of 3.37 percent, and the Islamabad Capital Territory, whose population passed two million with an average growth rate of 4.91 percent. The results from the count, which began in March, are also set to help give a clearer picture about religious minority numbers in the Muslim-majority country. The weeks-long process, a challenge in a country known for corruption and dysfunction, deployed a team of more than 300,000 people and involved 55 million forms. The results will be the basis for revising political boundaries, parliamentary seat allocations and finances ahead of national elections, due to be held by the end of 2018.Powerful Punjab province, for example, could see its political grip weaken as a result of its population not rising at a similar rate to other provinces.

Flower wants Pakistan fans to 'see their heroes'

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - World XI coach Andy Flower is looking forward to being involved in a series that enables Pakistan fans to see their heroes after years of being starved of international cricket, he told AFP on Friday. The former Zimbabwe batsman and ex-England coach was named Thursday as the man who will oversee a World XI that will play three Twenty20 internationals in Lahore next month in a bid to revive international cricket in Pakistan, where the sport has a fanatical following.Pakistan, a short series against Zimbabwe two years ago apart, has effectively been a no-go area for top-flight international cricket since an attack by armed militants on Sri Lankas team bus in Lahore in 2009.Since then Pakistan, who won this years International Cricket Council Champions Trophy one-day tournament in England, have played most of their home games in the United Arab Emirates. Now the hope is that the World XI fixtures will act as the forerunner to the resumption of full international cricket in Pakistan. This is important both for Pakistan cricket and for Pakistan as a country as a whole, Flower told AFP in a telephone interview.Pakistan is a major cricket nation and its very important for cricket there that the fans can see their heroes at home. Its something theyve been starved off in recent years.Flower, now the England and Wales Cricket Boards director of coaching, added he was looking forward to overseeing a World XI squad imbued with a special spirit.Of course they are professionals who will be getting paid. But beyond the narrow confines of playing, I sense they are keen to do something for Pakistan cricket.I think there will be a special spirit in the team, explained Flower, adding he had complete trust in safety arrangements overseen in part by ECB security expert Reg Dickason.South Africa captain Faf du Plessis will lead a side that also includes Australias George Bailey and South Africas Hashim Amla as well as former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood.Flower was the coach and Collingwood the captain when England won their lone global limited-overs title -- the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.Flower is eager to experience the passion Pakistan has for cricket again. In the early days with Zimbabwe, many of our matches were against the sub-continental teams so we got to know their players well, he said.In 1995, my brother Grant -- who has since coached Pakistan -- and I shared a record partnership by brothers in a Test (of 269) against Pakistan. He scored a double century and I got a hundred. That was probably the proudest moment of my playing career, added the 49-year-old former left-handed batsman.Flower was also Englands coach when Pakistans Mohammad Amir, along with pace partner Mohammad Asif and then captain Salman Butt, was banned for deliberately bowling no-balls in a spot-fixing scam in the 2010 Lords Test. All three players were later jailed by an English court. But since his return to international cricket in January 2016, Amir has starred for Pakistan in their Champions Trophy triumph and since then played a key role in taking Essex, Flowers old club, to the top of English crickets County Championship First Division table. That was a very tumultuous time for Pakistan cricket, said Flower, as he recalled the events of 2010.While not condoning in any way what happened, he (Amir) was a young man who made a bad decision.I believe in second chances and it looks like hes taking his with both hands.

Ton-up Stokes rides his luck against Windies

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - Englands Ben Stokes made the most of being dropped twice to score a hundred that took the shine off an improved bowling display by the West Indies on the first day of the second Test at Headingley on Friday.Stokess score of exactly 100 was the cornerstone of Englands modest 258 all out.Yet a good day for the West Indies, 19 for one at stumps, could have been so much better. Both Stokes and England captain Joe Root, who made 59 after winning the toss, were dropped in the slips in single figures.Stokes was missed again on 98, with the three errors effectively costing the West Indies some 142 runs.Recalled fast bowler Shannon Gabriel led the attack with four wickets for 51 runs in 17 overs and new-ball partner Kemar Roach took four for 71 in 19.5.This was still an encouraging display by the West Indies given their utterly inept performance in the field during an innings and 209-run defeat inside three days in the inaugural day/night Test in Britain at Edgbaston last week that saw them go 1-0 down in this three-match series. We might be a little disappointed with 260-odd, Stokes told Sky Sports. We wont know if its a good score until the end of the West Indies innings.I had a brain fade on 98. It was one of those moments, where I thought what am I doing?.He added: I was annoyed at myself for getting out too. Maybe I switched off a little bit so hopefully I can use that feeling of frustration when I next get into that position.Meanwhile Roach, the bowler who suffered the most from West Indies catching lapses, said: We had a big meeting about discipline, we werent good enough in the first Test and we came out and were much better here.Stokes batted really well -- it didnt go our way with those catches. Today was not a good day at the office.Conditions in what was a standard red-ball clash looked set fair for batting when Root won the toss.Yet England still slumped to 71 for four shortly after lunch.Alastair Cook, who made 243 at Edgbaston, was out for 11 on Friday when Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer edged Gabriel low to Kyle Hope at third slip.England have long had problems at two, three and five in Test cricket and all the batsmen in those positions -- Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan -- fell cheaply as they slumped to 71 for four shortly after lunch.Indeed England would have been 44 for four if Kieran Powell had not dropped a routine slip catch off Gabriel when Root was on eight. To make matters worse second slip Kraigg Brathwaite floored Stokes on nine off Roach.Root, leading England on his Yorkshire home ground for the first time, equalled South Africa star AB de Villierss all-time record of fifties in 12 consecutive Tests when he swept recalled leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo for four. But there was no repeat of his Edgbaston century, with Root toe-ending a sweep off Bishoo to slip.Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow could not staunch the flow of wickets, falling for two when West Indies captain Jason Holder held an excellent low slip catch off Gabriel.Stokes and Moeen Ali (22) counter-attacked after tea in a brisk stand of 68.But Stokes, two runs shy of a century, mistimed a drive off Roach only for Gabriel to drop a simple chance at mid-on.Left-handed batsman Stokes took two off the next ball to complete his sixth hundred in 38 Tests and first against the West Indies in 122 balls with 17 fours. But soon afterwards he was caught behind trying to pull off Gabriel. The bowler and the often fiery Stokes appeared to exchange words before the batsman walked off.England, despite wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich dropping a sitter, lost their last three wickets on 258.That left West Indies with a tricky 12 overs to bat.But they lost just one wicket, Powell edging James Anderson to first slip where Cook held his 150th Test catch.

Spin-wary Australia face confident Bangladesh

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Australia is wary of the threat posed by Bangladeshs spinners ahead of their two-Test series starting on Sunday in Dhaka, batsman Glenn Maxwell said. The Australians have not won a Test series on the subcontinent since 2011, when they beat Sri Lanka 1-0, and have been preparing hard for the slow and turning tracks.Steve Smiths team have not played a Test in Bangladesh in more than a decade and their preparations were hampered when their only practice game was washed out because of flooding in Fatullah. The opening Test at Mirpur will be the first between the countries since Ricky Pontings side toured the country in 2006, winning the two-match series 2-0.Part of the visitors drills this time has included batting in the nets without a front pad, a lay designed to emphasise the importance of using the bat in order to avoid leg-before decisions against the slow bowlers.Despite their lack of match practice, Maxwell, who suffered a heatstroke during training this week, believes the tactic will help the Australians against an upbeat Bangladesh unit, that has won two of their last three Tests. If you dont have the safety of your front pad it makes you get your leg out of the way and actually your bat, he said.So I think it is more about refining your defence and making sure you trust the fact that you can hit the ball and not hoping that your pads are there just to save you.Maxwell added: It is more about guys who are hitting the stumps regularly and Bangladesh do that really well. They bowl stump to stump and put pressure on your defence so I suppose thats one thing we will work on.Australias most recent trips to the subcontinent ended in defeat. In 2016, they lost 3-0 in Sri Lanka and earlier this year they were beaten 2-1 in India.Currently ranked fourth in the world, the former top-ranked team risk slipping further down the International Cricket Council ratings if they lose either Test, or draw both matches.Bangladesh, meanwhile, are approaching the series as a great opportunity to register their first Test win against Australia since they were awarded Test-playing status in 2000.Spinners Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan and Taijul Islam, who combined for 20 wickets during their historic win against England last year, loom as the key players for the hosts.Star all-rounder Shakib is confident his teams home advantage and spin force will trouble their Australian counterparts. The visitors are also expected to rely heavily on spinners in Dhaka by playing left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, for his first Test in four years, alongside veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon.I think our spin attack is better than them. I wont say in all conditions, but in our conditions, we are better than them, said Shakib. We need to do well in all aspects if we want to win the Tests. Whatever the strengths they have, Australia are always tough opposition, he added.Talented left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman, who missed the England series because of injury, is set to bolster the pace attack for the Mushfiqur Rahim-led side.Squads:Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahim (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mehedi Hasan, Shafiul Islam, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed.Australia: Steve Smith (captain), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson and Jackson Bird.

Overtaking Benaud means little to Australia's Lyon

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Nathan Lyon said Friday he was not carried away by the prospect of overtaking legendary Richie Benaud to become Australias second most successful spinner during the forthcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh.Off-spinner Lyon needs just one wicket to equal Benauds mark of 248 in the first Test beginning at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.A second scalp in the match will take Lyon, who has 247 wickets from 67 Test, just behind Australias all-time spin wicket-taker Shane Warne.I have always said from my first game to this game, I am not about personal success, Lyon told reporters in Dhaka.I will sit back at the end of my career and look at where I get to on the wickets column. For me, it is about playing well for the Australia cricket team, he said.Lyon was expected to lead Australias spin attack in the Bangladesh Tests as the visitors play their first series against the hosts in more than a decade. The opening Test will be the first between the two countries since Ricky Pontings side toured Bangladesh in 2006, clean-sweeping the series 2-0.Bangladesh, which only attained Test status in 2000, have moved on from that defeat, and hope to build on the recent good form to impress fans with a series win on home soil against Australia.All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan already delivered the opening salvo in the build-up to the Test match, claiming the hosts have a better spin attack than the Australians for the Bangladeshi conditions.Lyon was not prepared to join the debate. Both teams havent come up against each other so it is a big statement to come out and say that, he said. But everyones entitled to their own opinion. We are just worried about what we are doing, to be honest. They can come out and say whatever they want. We are training and preparing well. We are looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead, he said.Lyon insisted that before facing the spinners, Bangladesh batsmen must handle the fearsome Aussie pace attack. We have got three very good fast bowlers in the squad with Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins and Jackson Bird who can get the ball moving in these conditions, he said.We have seen them do it before in Sri Lanka and India. I dont think it will be any different in Bangladesh.I think for us Australians will be about bowling in partnerships and bowling well together to take 20 wickets, said Lyon. The second Test of the series will be held in Chittagong from September 4-8.

Make-up bill worth 26,000 euros causes blushes for France's Macron

PARIS (AFP) - Hes only 39 and fresh-faced, but Frances President Emmanuel Macron has run up a make-up bill of 26,000 euros in his first 100 days in office, offering fresh ammunition to his critics. The bill, revealed by Le Point magazine and confirmed by the presidency to AFP on Friday, was paid to a freelance make-up artist for work since the centrist took power in mid-May.It recalled an embarrassing revelation about the balding former president Francois Hollande who was forced to admit to employing a private hairdresser on a pre-tax monthly salary of nearly 10,000 euros ($11,800).Opponents seized on the total of the make-up bills -- one for 10,000 euros and another for 16,000 euros -- with most of the French media publishing stories about the issue. While France is slaving away, Macron is spreading (the equivalent of) 23 times the minimum wage on his face, wrote far-right strategist Florian Philippot on Twitter.A source in the presidency told BFM television that future costs would be significantly reduced, while claiming that that both Hollande and former right-wing president Nicolas Sarkozy spent more on make-up.A beauty writer in Britains The Telegraph newspaper offered some tips for some cheaper male cosmetics in an article entitled How President Macron could save himself 8000 euros on make-up a month. Many male politicians in the West wear foundation while making media appearances to counter the bleaching effect of studio lights or flash photography, as well as concealer to cover up signs of under-eye fatigue. The leak to Le Point comes at a bad time for Frances youngest-ever president whose approval ratings have fallen sharply since his victory in May standing in his first ever election.A recent poll showed that only 37 percent of French people were happy with his performance so far and he faces a tricky battle to ram through promised labour market reforms next month.Earlier this month, Macrons wife Brigitte, his former school teacher who is 25 years older than him, joked about the difficulties of living with her youthful husband during an interview with Elle magazine. The 20 years of age difference... its really nothing, she said. Of course, when were having breakfast, theres me with my wrinkles and him looking fresh, but its like that.
