ICC welcomes World XI tour of Pakistan

Posted:

DUBAI (Agencies) - The International Cricket Council has welcomed the World XI’s tour of Pakistan following the naming of the team who will travel to Lahore in September and confirmation that the three game series will go ahead.Mr Giles Clarke, the ICC Director who has served as the Chairman of the Pakistan Task Team since 2009, was optimistic that the series will be the first step towards international cricket returning safely to Pakistan with further T20 International matches against Sri Lanka and the Windies penciled in for later in the year.Mr Clarke, who had visited Lahore in January, said: “I’m delighted that Pakistan will be hosting a high-profile series, which features several top international cricketers from a number of ICC Members. This tour is not only important for cricket in Pakistan but also for international cricket since it opens the possibility of other teams, media and sponsors visiting Pakistan for bilateral series.“Pakistan has been an important Member of the ICC and the cricket community has felt its pain. As part of its duty of care, the cricket community has always ensured that the sport is not affected due to no fault of the Pakistan Cricket Board when it has continued to play its away series off-shore.“The ICC Members releasing their top players and the respective player unions backing this series is testament to the support the world has extended to Pakistan during these difficult times. The focus of everyone in the international game is the safe return of cricket to Pakistan.“It will be an excellent opportunity for Pakistan fans to watch live in action not only their local stars but also the international cricket heroes. I wish the PCB and the World XI best of luck and will be following the matches from the Gaddafi Stadium.”The Pakistan Task Team, which was formed in June 2009 and also included ICC Chief Executive David Richardson (then ICC General Manager – Cricket), made 63 recommendations in June 2011 about the organisation of the game in the country. The PCB accepted most of those recommendations and it resulted in the side remaining competitive at the top level, evident from the fact that it reached the quarter-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, qualified for the final of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2014, attained number-one Test ranking in September 2016, before winning the ICC Champions Trophy this year.Mr Richardson, who has been a regular visitor to Pakistan, said: “The ICC wants to see regular international cricket being played safely in all its Member countries and the World XI playing Pakistan in Lahore next month is a step towards that for the PCB.“The PCB’s plans for the tour will include comprehensive security arrangements for the safety and security of the players, officials, media and spectators. As such, the ICC is fully supportive of these games. That said, all the stakeholders will remain vigilant and re-evaluate the situation if required.“We are optimistic that this will be the next step in a steady and safe return of international cricket to Pakistan.”

Patience and fight key to Windies revival, says Holder

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder said increased patience with the ball and greater fight with the bat were the keys to his sides chances of an improved showing in the second Test against England at Headingley. The West Indies head into Fridays match after a chastening innings and 209-run defeat inside three days in the inaugural day/night Test in England at Edgbaston that left them 1-0 down in this three-match series.England, on the back of Alastair Cooks double century and a hundred from captain Joe Root, piled up 514 for eight declared in Birmingham. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad then leading the way with the ball, England took 19 wickets in one day as West Indies were bowled out for 168 and 137 on what turned out to be Saturdays final day of a lopsided match.West Indies great Curtly Ambrose labelled the performance embarrassing and pathetic but Holder insisted an improvement was possible at Headingley, despite the short turnaround.Weve had a few days off, said Holder on Thursday. We sat down and spoke about a number of things.I think its more of a patience thing with our bowlers, having a consistent plan and sticking to it.Mainly for our batsmen, to get stuck in and fight it out.Its not going to be easy here, were coming up against a very good side and were relatively inexperienced, the all-rounder added.Weve got guys to open up their minds a bit more to change and were going to be tinkering a few things going into this second Test, said Holder.Asked how the team had dealt with what he labelled over the top criticism, Holder replied: Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Some guys use it as motivation, every individual is different. We cant control it so we might as well focus on what we can do and thats play cricket. The West Indies are currently without several senior players, the result of a longstanding row with administrators and a clash with the Caribbean Premier League, although the likes of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels are set to arrive in time for the subsequent one-day international series with England.Meanwhile Holder said he hoped a fledgling side had learnt a lot from the Edgbaston debacle. We were under the pump for three days and it wasnt the best showing for us, Holder freely admitted. Its important we rally together and stay together. Through hard times we have to stay together and this is a difficult time as a group.Holder said greater clarity of purpose on the field would also aid the West Indies cause.I think weve got to be decisive about what we want to do and stick to it. I dont think we stick to our plans as long as we want. When it comes to our bowling, I think we were relatively inconsistent and we all agreed on that. I want us to focus a bit more on consistency.

England recall Woakes for second Windies Test

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - England have recalled Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes for the second Test against the West Indies at Headingley, captain Joe Root announced Thursday.Woakes replaces Middlesex seamer Toby Roland-Jones in the only change to the side that thrashed the West Indies by an innings and 209 runs inside three days during last weeks inaugural day/night Test in England at Edgbaston.Woakes had become a mainstay in all three international formats, but a side strain suffered barely two overs into Englands Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh at The Oval in June put him out of action for 11 weeks.During Englands recent 3-1 home series win over South Africa, Woakess place as third seamer went to Roland-Jones, who took eight wickets on Test debut at The Oval. The 28-year-old Woakes was in Englands squad for the first Test against the West Indies but lost out on his Birmingham home ground to Roland-Jones.Since his injury, Woakes has managed one first-class match. His five-wicket haul and a second innings fifty during Warwickshires 190-run First Division County Championship win over Middlesex at Lords led to his inclusion in Englands squad for the Windies series opener. Now, with England having just two more Tests before they defend the Ashes in Australia, Woakes will look to impress at Headingley, where the second of a three-match series starts on Friday.Chris is back in, Toby unfortunately misses out, Root told reporters at Headingley on Thursday. He (Roland-Jones) has not done a lot wrong at all, he took his opportunities, hes played some fantastic cricket and I see him being a massive part of our future moving forward, added Root, who will be captaining England in a Test at his Yorkshire home ground for the first time. But its a great chance for Chris to come back into the side and show his class like he did last time, said the star batsman of Woakes, who has scored two fifties in his 17 Tests and taken 48 wickets at an average of under 30.Roland-Jones, however, did all that could reasonably be asked of him in taking 14 wickets at 19.35 apiece in his first three Tests.West Indies received widespread criticism for their woeful showing at Edgbaston but Root said England were prepared for an improved display by the tourists in Leeds. We know theyre a side that are capable of some strong performances and we expect them to come back hard, he said.Roots first Test as captain saw England beat South Africa at Lords, only for the Proteas to level the series next up at Trent Bridge. Now the star batsman wants to make sure theres no repeat of that slip against the West Indies. We have got to make sure that our game is the best it can be and we follow up what was a really good win last week, Root said.To try to make sure that we leave this week having won the series is really important for us as a side.

Shakib seeks clean Test sweep against Australia

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan said Thursday he wants no less than a clean sweep for Bangladesh when the Test minnows face a strong Australian side in their first series in more than a decade. The Test starting Sunday in Dhaka is the first between Australia and Bangladesh since Ricky Pontings side toured the country in 2006 and claimed the series 2-0.Bangladesh -- which only attained Test status in 2000 -- have moved on from that defeat, and hope to build on recent stronger form to impress fans with a series win on home soil against Australia.I dont see why it cant be possible. Our expectation: winning both Tests, Shakib told reporters in Dhaka. We need to do well in all aspects if we want to win the Tests. Whatever the strengths they have, Australia are always tough opposition. They can adapt to any conditions very quickly. None can do this better than the Aussies. The visitors trained in Darwin, a tropical city in northern Australia, ahead of the Bangladesh tour to adjust to the hot and humid conditions expected for the two-Test series. But even once touching down there were hiccups, with batsman Glenn Maxwell suffering heatstroke during an early training session and a warm-up match cancelled due to flooding.Shakib said Bangladesh would be hoping to capitalise on Australias poor run in recent South Asia clashes. The world number-two Test side lost 3-0 to Sri Lanka in a series in 2016, before succumbing 2-1 against India earlier this year.Bangladesh meanwhile have won two of their last three Tests, one against Sri Lanka and a historic win over England.Shakib -- the worlds top all-rounder in all three cricket formats -- said Bangladeshs spin attack would put pressure on the Steve Smith-led side. The hosts are hoping Shakib, off-spinner Mehedi Hasan and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam can undo Australias formidable batting lineup.I think our spin attack is better than them. I wont say in all conditions, but in our condition we are better than them, said Shakib.Taijul and Miraj (Mehedi) are bowling well for a long period. I hope they will do well in this series as well.Shakib, Mehedi and Taijul took all 20 wickets when Bangladesh recorded their first-ever Test win over England by 108 runs in October. The second Test of the series will be held in Chittagong from September 4-8.

Law tells Windies to ignore 'pathetic' talk

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - Stuart Law has urged the West Indies to ignore their critics and follow diminutive batsman Jermaine Blackwoods example as they look to bounce back in the second Test against England at Headingley.Fridays match comes less than a week since West Indies coach Law saw his side suffer a crushing innings and 209-run defeat in the series opener at Edgbaston as the inaugural day/night Test in England ended inside three days. That led West Indies fast-bowling great Curtly Ambrose to label the current side pathetic.Law was saddened that Ambrose, until recently the West Indies bowling coach, had vented his criticism in a British newspaper rather than directly to the players.Curtly not long ago was the coach of this team so it is disappointing that criticism comes, said Law.We have to understand why it is there. We are not performing as well as we want. What can we do? We have to get our noses down, our backsides up and play better. I believe in these young men. They have got high skills. It is just the experience of learning how to play in a very tough environment.West Indies arrived in England without several senior players, the consequence of a bitter dispute with their own board and a clash with the lucrative Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament, although relations are improving to the extent that Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels have been selected for the subsequent one-day series in England.Meanwhile, Law was encouraged by the fighting performance of Blackwood, whose 79 not out in the first innings at Edgbaston was a rare West Indies highlight of a closing Saturday where they lost 19 wickets in total. He showed a beautiful solid defence and hit the bad ball away, we cant ask much more, Law said.He is only 5ft 2in but he walks around like he is 10 foot tall and that is the sort of attitude that really warms my heart, the former Australia batsman added.Hopefully it is infectious in the group.Law indicated he would give the XI that played at Edgbaston a chance to redeem themselves, even though fast bowler Shannon Gabriel is now fit for selection.England, however, have made one change with captain Joe Root confirming Thursday that Chris Woakes had replaced Toby Roland-Jones.Middlesex paceman Roland-Jones made his Test debut earlier this season against South Africa after Woakes was ruled out with a side strain suffered during Englands Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh at The Oval in June.Woakes, who on form is a better batsman than Roland-Jones, is set to act as a support seamer behind James Anderson and Stuart Broad. His recall was the only change to the England team that played at Edgbaston where Alastair Cooks double century and a hundred from England captain Joe Root established a commanding position cemented by Anderson and Broad. But Jonny Bairstow, the wicket-keeper/batsman, insisted there was no danger of complacency setting in as England seek a fourth consecutive Test match win after a 3-1 success against South Africa.Well go about it in the same way that weve gone about the South Africa series and the first Test, said Bairstow, who like Root will be playing on his Yorkshire home ground. Its not about putting on a show, its about getting a result.Bairstow, who made 140 against Sri Lanka in last years Test at Headingley, said conditions in Leeds would help ensure England did not get ahead of themselves. If you get through those difficult periods -- if its a bit cloudy and its nipping or swinging -- then its a fantastic place to bat.But if you dont respect the conditions, then it can be difficult, the 27-year-old added.Bairstow also forecast a much-improved showing from Laws men. Were expecting the West Indies to come back at us pretty hard after Edgbaston, he said.

India beat Sri Lanka in 2nd ODI

Posted:

PALLEKELE (AFP) - Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar anchored Indias chase after a stunning batting collapse as the visitors edged past Sri Lanka by three wickets in the second one-day international Thursday.Leg-spinner Akila Dananjaya returned career-best figures of 6-54 to make India stutter at 131-7 while chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised target of 231 in 47 overs in Pallekele.Dhoni, who scored 45, then put on an unbeaten 100-run stand with Kumar, who made 53, to steer the team home in 44.2 overs and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.Quite an exciting game of cricket...Something that gave us a tough test but good to come through eventually, India skipper Virat Kohli said at the presentation.Quite magnificent to see two 100-run partnerships in a chase of 230 (231) and a collapse in between - seven wickets down. you dont quite see that in this game too often, he added.India lost seven wickets for 22 runs after a 109-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and in-form Shikhar Dhawan.Man of the match Dananjaya, who was one of the three changes in the teams starting lineup, drew first blood after trapping Sharma lbw for 54.Dhawan, who hit a match-winning 132 in the opening ODI in Dambulla, soon joined his partner in the pavilion after falling to left-arm spinner Milinda Siriwardana for 49.The left-handed batsman was done in by a superb catch by former captain Angelo Mathews at short-fine leg.The 23-year-old Dananjaya then turned on the heat against the number-three ODI side with his googly. He got Kedar Jadhav, Kohli and Lokesh Rahul bowled in his fourth over to take some steam out of the Indian chase. What we knew of him was more of an off-spinner bowling the odd leg-break, but he picks up four wickets on googlys. Its difficult when you havent seen the guy at all, said KohliNow we are more wary...but credit to him he capitalised on the bit of hesitation we had out there in the middle, Kohli, who was out after hitting a boundary off Dananjaya, added.Dananjaya, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Hambantota in 2012, was on song as he kept making inroads with the wickets of Hardik Pandya, who injured his hamstring while bowling, and Axar Patel. But ice cool Dhoni kept the chase on track with the gutsy Kumar, who had gone wicketless during his spell as the teams pace spearhead. While Dhoni kept picking the singles and twos, Kumar was happy playing second fiddle before unleashing his power and register his maiden ODI fifty.Disappointed, we came really close and we couldnt finish it, Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga said after the loss.Once they needed 100 runs, we tried everything. Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar batted sensibly. Unlucky we didnt get that wicket, he added.Earlier the left-handed Siriwardana, coming in to bat at number six, hit a gritty 58 to lift Sri Lanka to 236-8 in 50 overs after being put into bat.Siriwardana put on a crucial 91-run sixth-wicket stand with Chamara Kapugedara, who made 40, after the hosts were in trouble at 121-5 against a disciplined Indian attack.Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets while leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal got two.The third match is scheduled for Sunday at the same venue.

List of reasons why potential candidates fail to join Chinese army

Posted:

SHANGHAI (AFP) - The Chinese military is fretting about the growing number of would-be recruits failing its stringent fitness test, but says it has the answer: avoid masturbation and computer games.Peoples Liberation Army chiefs aim to ensure that applicants are in tip-top condition to join the rank and file of the worlds largest military force. This month the official PLA Daily spelt out on social media 10 reasons why so many potential recruits fall at the first hurdle. It said 20 percent were overweight while eight percent were refused because they had an enlarged testicular vein. The newspaper did not spell out how army officers knew about the vein issue but said the problems were caused by too much masturbation, too many video games and not enough exercise.Obvious or oversized tattoos were also a no-no, it said, pointing out that others failed the test because of liver problems associated with too much alcohol. The PLA Daily said that in one city alone more than half the candidates were rejected after failing to show they were fit and healthy enough.Beijing said the PLA had high standards.Chinas recruitment process has strict rules and procedures, the defence ministry said in a statement. The quality of our recruits is guaranteed and the headwaters of our military will flow long and strong. That did not stop some Chinese internet users from having a bit of fun with the news.Going online everyday on the computer or phone, late-night gaming and masturbating, it would be weird if they were actually healthy and fit said one user on Weibo, Chinas version of Twitter.Another saw a more serious side: Young people nowadays are living too comfortably, theyre turning into couch potatoes. It is not the first time this month that military officials have railed against modern lifestyles. The same army newspaper said officers were worried about young soldiers getting so addicted to the online battle game King of Glory that they would struggle to remain focused during an actual war.Once a soldier is cut off from the game for an urgent mission, he could be absent-minded during the operation if his mind remains on the game, the PLA Daily warned gravely.Since coming to power in 2012 President Xi Jinping has trumpeted the need to build a stronger combat-ready military, while leading efforts to centralise the Communist Partys control over it.Chinas military budget had seen double-digit increases for several years until last year, when it was raised 7.6 percent.
