England hero Ali wants Ashes role for Saqlain

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - England star Moeen Ali wants Saqlain Mushtaqs coaching role made permanent so he can continue to work with him in the upcoming Ashes series following his record-breaking feats against South Africa. The 30-year-old Ali, an off-spinner and left-handed batsman, became the first man to score more than 250 runs and take 25 wickets in a four Test-match series during Englands 3-1 win over the Proteas.Afterwards, Ali was unstinting in his praise of spin coach Saqlain. The former Pakistan off-spinner is, however, currently employed by the England and Wales Cricket Board on a consultancy basis only and Ali said: If you are going to have batting, fielding and fast-bowling coaches, it would be nice to have a spin-bowling coach for pretty much all the games. If I do get on that plane for the Ashes, hopefully Ill have Saqqy sitting next to me, he added. Id like him to be there. He can help me out.Ali has often labelled himself a second spinner. But his bowling has improved markedly under Saqlains guidance.Saqqy has been amazing for me in terms of helping with my fields, helping me understand my bowling a lot more than I had done previously -- and I think that has been the biggest difference, said Ali after bowling England to a 177-run win in the fourth Test at Old Trafford with more than a day to spare on Monday.Hashim Amlas 83 held England up but a toilet break gave Ali a chance to consult Saqlain and he subsequently had the star batsman lbw.It was the start of an Ali burst that yielded three wickets for five runs in 11 balls. He (Saqlain) gave me the option of putting a silly point in, Ali said. Maybe it put something in the batters mind in terms of playing forward.I bowled a bit shorter, he went back. I think that made the difference. There is always something new with Saqqy. The basics are the same, but he has found a few variations in my bowling which I am working on.He is brilliant with my mindset, explained Ali, who ended the match with two wickets in two balls after finishing Englands victory in the third Test at The Oval with a hat-trick.Before, I just bowled. I didnt really think too much, added Ali, who finished with five for 69 on Monday.I let the captain set the field. Saqlain has helped me understand my action, field settings and the type of batsmen, said Ali, who took 10 wickets in Englands first Test win at Lords.Ashes-holders England have three Tests at home to the West Indies before they travel to Australia, with Ali hinting at a full-time role for Saqlain by saying: Thats not too far from the future. The South Africa series also saw Ali make valuable runs, as exemplified by his unbeaten second-innings 75 at Old Trafford.I feel a lot more confident in my ability, he said.I feel like it was building... I had been batting well over the last year, and the bowling was coming.Although he won both the man-of-the-match and series awards on Monday, Ali took no part in some of the celebrations that followed England captain Joe Root lifting the Basil DOliveira Trophy.Alis Muslim faith prohibits not just the drinking of alcohol but contact too -- a risk when champagne is being sprayed around on the winners podium. But former captain Alastair Cook made sure Ali was included in all the team photos before the corks started popping at Old Trafford. The team respects that, and Im obviously very grateful, Ali said.Cooky said make sure we take the picture first, and then I move out the way and they can do what they do.I dont feel I miss out, its just spraying a bottle, not that exciting really.

Gibson coach talk encourages du Plessis

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has liked what hes heard about potential new Proteas head coach Ottis Gibson. The current England bowling coach, Gibson has been tipped to succeed Russell Domingo, whose contract with Cricket South Africa expired after the end of a tour that finished with a 3-1 series defeat following Englands 177-run win in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Monday.I have asked the England team for their thoughts on Ottis, and theyve given me positive feedback, du Plessis told reporters after a reverse that completed a tough tour for South Africa, who also suffered one-day and Twenty20 series losses to England, as well as a disappointing first-round exit in the Champions Trophy.I believe (Englands) players are good judges, and will be honest with their reflections on a guy (and whether) hell work as a head coach.Theyve said some really good, positive things about him.Personally, if he is going to be the guy, we have to get to learn about each other first.Meanwhile England head coach Trevor Bayliss indicated he was getting ready for life without 48-year-old former West Indies head coach Gibson as a member of his backroom staff.I only found out from you guys (the press) -- thats the first wed heard of it, said Bayliss of British media reports linking Gibson with the South Africa post. Theres nothing been finalised yet.The Australian added: Im at a loss at the moment whether its a go-ahead -- we havent heard for sure.By all accounts, it sounds like it.Meanwhile du Plessis said he had held talks with CSA chiefs about the future identity of the South Africa coach. There were conversations, he said. The first was were we happy with Russell?, and the guys said yes. Then it was the panels decision to try and see if there was someone they could see who would possibly take the team forward. He added: I just gave my input, where I said I think Russell is doing a good job at the moment... but if there is someone who can challenge the team more, by all means go and look whos out there. That decision will only be made, as far as I know, when it gets to the board. This was a difficult tour for Domingo, who had to fly home after his mother was involved in a car accident and return again when she died of her injuries. But du Plessis said the upheaval and general uncertainty over Domingos future could not account for a poor run of results.I cant use that as an excuse. The coaching staff have been brilliant and they havent been sidetracked by what was going on.If it ended for Russell like this then its a disappointing way to send him off with the players not performing.Hes been a crucial part of what weve been doing for the last while and we didnt play well.South Africa arrived in England back in May without key fast bowler Dale Steyn, while seamer Vernon Philander was rarely fully fit.Several players who might have been in the squad had ended their South Africa careers to play for English counties instead, while AB de Villiers, one of the worlds leading batsmen, opted out of the Test series. But du Plessis said South Africa had to get ready for a future where former captain de Villiers no longer played Test cricket. We all know how good AB is, and we missed him, but weve spent too much time talking about when is AB going to come back?, he explained. The hope of him coming back is something I think we need to move past... If AB comes back its a huge bonus... but I dont expect it, du Plessis added.

VW offers discounts against dirty old diesels

Posted:

FRANKFURT AM MAIN (AFP) - Carmaker Volkswagen said Tuesday it would offer cash incentives of up to 10,000 euros to trade in old diesel cars, as Germany struggles to reduce harmful emissions following a cheating scandal. The VW brand said it would offer buyers trading in an old diesel a discount on cars meeting the latest Euro 6 emissions standard, ranging from 2,000 euros ($2,363) on its up compact cars to 10,000 euros ($11,700) for a Touareg SUV.And the carmaker proposed an additional discount of between 1,000 and 2,380 euros for those buying more environmentally friendly hybrid, all-electric or natural-gas-powered vehicles. The VW statement said it was acknowledging its share of responsibility for climate- and health-friendly mobility on German streets. The cash offers will be valid until the end of 2017, a VW spokesman told AFP, adding that the company is considering extending them beyond Germany to cover all of Europe. The proposed incentives come after a government-industry summit last week on tackling the high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from diesel cars.Following the summit, VW, BMW, Daimler and Opel vowed to reduce emissions with free-of-charge software updates for newer vehicles and cash-for-clunkers schemes for older cars. The VW groups Audi, Skoda, Seat and commercial vehicle subsidiaries all presented their own versions of the scheme Tuesday, with luxury automaker Audi also offering discounts of up to 10,000 euros.Fellow VW subsidiary Porsche announced rebates of up to 5,000 euros, but specified that they would apply to all of Europe immediately.Rival carmaker Daimler for its part said it would offer a discount of 2,000 euros to buyers swapping their older diesels for a new, lower-emissions Mercedes-Benz by the end of the year, adding that its deal was Europe-wide as well.Buyers of a Smart electric car will get a rebate of 1,000 euros, a Daimler spokesman told AFP.BMW already announced last week that it would offer a trade-in bonus of up to 2,000 euros for buyers purchasing a new, lower-emissions BMW or Mini.Car companies have been in the spotlight over high levels of harmful NOx emissions since Volkswagen admitted to cheating regulatory emissions tests on 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide in 2015.Since then, suspicion has spread to other groups in Germanys vaunted carmaking sector, long favoured by politicians anxious to protect jobs and nurture economic growth.Media reports that carmakers secretly colluded on technical specifications -- including exhaust treatment technology at the heart of the diesel scandal -- have further blackened the industrys name. And it is scrambling to catch up to new competitors like US-based Tesla Motors, which is gearing up for production of its first mass-market all-electric car.

Mexico braces for more Tropical Storm Franklin

MEXICO CITY7 (AFP) - Tropical Storm Franklin swept Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula on Tuesday, dumping heavy rain on its pristine beaches but doing relatively little damage -- though the country was braced for a second round.Franklin made landfall early Tuesday some 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of the beach resort of Cancun, and was advancing to the northwest at 20 kilometers per hour, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).It was set to finish crossing the peninsula later Tuesday and enter the Gulf of Mexico, where it could strengthen -- possibly into a hurricane -- before crashing back into the Mexican coastline. The storms second landfall is expected Wednesday night or early Thursday, to the north of the major port city of Veracruz, according to forecasts. The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, according to the Miami-based NHC in its 1500 GMT bulletin. Some weakening is likely until the center moves back over water, and strengthening is expected thereafter until landfall occurs in mainland Mexico, it said.Mexican authorities had preventively evacuated some 300 residents of small fishing villages in the storms path.Fortunately we have not received reports of any problems or accidents related to the storm, the governor of Quintana Roo state, Carlos Joaquin, told Mexican radio network Formula. The international airport in Chetumal, the state capital, reopened Tuesday morning after closing overnight. Schools remained closed statewide, however.A red alert remained in place for the south and center of the state.Mexicos Yucatan peninsula is at high risk for devastating hurricane damage. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma hit the Riviera Maya -- the stretch of picturesque beaches and resorts south of Cancun -- as a Category Four storm and pummeled the area for 48 hours. It killed eight people and did $10 billion in damage.

Shehbaz Sharif to be appointed PML-N president: Raja Zafarul Haq

Posted:

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif is to be appointed president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), chairman of PML-N’s central working committee Raja Zafarul Haq reported on Tuesday. The senior party member laid bare decision of the party leadership in an interview with British Broadcasting Agency (BBC) and asserted that formal announcement is to be made soon.He said that majority of the party members favour CM Shehbaz to take place of PML-N’s former president after he was issued notice today by the election commission to give up the seat.He said that Shehbaz Sharif was appointed president of the political organisation earlier when ex-premier Nawaz Sharif was living in exile in Saudi Arabia.Decision of the organisation to appoint Shehbaz as party chief has come in hours after Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) served a notice to the former premier to relinquish party president’s seat as a disqualified leader could not hold a party office. The notification was issued in lines with Political Parties Act 2002.The commission has served the notice a day ahead of former premier Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Lahore along with cavalcade via GT Road in an apparent power show that opposition parties have branded an act to pressurise state institutions. The ousted NawazNawaz Sharif was disqualified by the election commission on order of the apex court on July 28 under Article 62 and Article 63.Opposition parties had lodged petitions against the then premier over Panama Leaks demanding trial of the first family for the assets and properties they owned, alleging that the premier and his children resorted to money laundering and graft. The top court took up the case in October and formal hearings of the petitions began in November. After around four months, a verdict was reserved by the top court in February and was delivered on April 20 that ordered for formation of a six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the first family. Then Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif appeared before the team to answer the questions and so did his children, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz and Maryam Safdar. After 60 days, the probe committee filed its report in the court and within two weeks, a verdict that was delivered on July 28 ordered the elections authority to disqualify Nawaz Sharif.
