Philander fit, ready to aid South Africa revival

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Vernon Philander is confident both he and South Africa will be firing on all cylinders as they look to draw their Test series with England at Old Trafford.Philander was unable to be at his best during Englands 239-run win in the third Test at The Oval after being struck down by a mystery stomach virus which meant he could only bowl 32 overs in the match. What made it worse for the Proteas was that the overcast conditions appeared ideal for accurate seamer Philander, renowned for his ability to make the most of any assistance from either cloudy skies or a pitch with some juice in it.The man-of-the-match in the Proteas second Test success at Trent Bridge, Philander even spent one night of The Oval match on a hospital drip. The best South Africa can hope for now, at 2-1 down in this four-match series, is a share of the spoils. And Philander is eager to play his full part when the Manchester fixture starts on Friday. It was either something I picked up or something I ate that really drilled me for a couple of days, Philander told reporters at Old Trafford on Wednesday as he recalled his illness. It was a tough week personally, but Im looking forward to this one, he added.Philander was already unwell come the toss in south London but, with few other options at his disposal, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis decided a half-fit Philander was better than none at all.In the end, the move did not pay off with the Proteas a bowler down at crucial stages of Englands first innings in particular.I think it probably got a lot worse having to bowl after losing quite a lot of fluids, the 32-year-old Philander explained. The night in hospital, being on a drip, really revitalised me. But then in the morning, it was (not good) again.Being on the loo for quite a bit, and having to go out to bowl, it was draining from a fluid point of view -- because I couldnt really keep anything down.It was really bad, but Im feeling a lot better now, Philander insisted.Fridays match will mark the final fixture of a lengthy tour, by modern standards, that started in mid-May.Weve got an honesty policy within the side, and we all admitted it wasnt our best Test match, Philander said of South Africas display at The Oval.We let ourselves down with the bat in the first innings ... so were looking forward to correcting those mistakes in this one and hoping to go level in the series. But there was no denying the effect of Philanders restricted involvement at The Oval, with the all-rounder admitting: Any sort of bowler, if you cant go at 100 percent and the conditions are suited for you as well ... it was really frustrating.Im obviously quite an important part of the line-up ... and bowling at 70 or 80 percent I could feel that my intensity was missed. But theres no excuses. We lost a Test match ... and we need to step up come Friday. The pattern so far has seen seen a heavy victory for one side followed by an equally dominant success for the other, with two large England wins falling either side of a massive 340-run victory for the Proteas at Trent Bridge. We hope the trend keeps going, said Philander. Its a bit of a rollercoaster at the moment, the way its been going and the margins of victory and defeat. But the boys are ready for this one.

Pneumonia-hit Chandimal gets inhaler exemption

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal has been given permission by crickets world body to use an inhaler during the second Test against India starting Thursday folowing a bout of pneumonia.Chandimal, who was appointed Test captain last month, missed the opening Test thrashing by India because of the illness. He returns for the second of the three Tests. The hosts have also been boosted by veteran spinner Rangana Herath being declared fit after injuring his finger in the first game. The International Cricket Council allowed Chandimal to use an inhaler to ease breathing while recovering from pneumonia. Many inhalers contain substances that are banned by sporting authorities.I am much better. Thanks to the ICC they gave permission for me to use the inhaler, and that will help me breathe properly. Rangana is also fit to play, Chandimal told reporters on Wednesday.Chandimal, who became skipper after Angelo Mathews quit following the teams humiliating one-day series defeat by Zimbabwe, hinted at playing two left-arm spinners at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.Uncapped spinner Malinda Pushpakumara is set to make his Test debut in a team struggling with many injuries. Most probably Malinda will come into the side. Dhananjaya (de Silva) has more chance to replace Asela (Gunaratne). Well have to see the surface, said Chandimal. Gunaratne broke a finger in the first Test.World number one Test side India start as overwhelming favourites against seventh-ranked Sri Lanka, but Chandimal dismissed suggestions of a whitewash defeat in the series.Who is saying that? You cant say that. They are a very talented team, but we arent going to lose 0-3, Chandimal said.We want to go and win. We are looking to give our best and win this game, level the series and then go to the third match. We have the determination to do that, he added.

Hat-trick hero calls for greater Asian involvement in England

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Moeen Ali believes English cricket is missing a trick by not reaching out to more potential players from Britains Asian communities.Ali, whose hat-trick sealed Englands 239-run win in the third Test against South Africa at The Oval on Monday, is the latest of several players of Asian descent to represent England, including former captain Nasser Hussain, with cricket deeply embedded in the life of many British Asian communities. But Ali, who was born and brought up in Birmingham, a city with one of Britains largest Asian populations, said more work was needed if English cricket was to make the most of this enthusiasm for the sport. Now, a lot more south Asian people are thinking: Actually, I could make a good career from this now. But its also down to the counties to do more to help South-Asian kids, Ali, who started his career with Birmingham-based Warwickshire before moving to Midlands rivals Worcestershire, told the Guardian on Wednesday.Look at Warwickshire. This is a big city of Asian people, so why cant you produce any south Asian players? I dont understand. The England and Wales Cricket Board have launched a south Asian initiative to help develop players from those backgrounds and Ali said: Its a very good step in the right direction to ask people how the ECB can help them. Its very positive because the pool of talent is vast. But the south Asian mentality must also change. Cricket is not just batting and bowling. Theres a lot of physical stuff, fitness, fielding, diet, discipline, being on time. The bearded Ali, a 30-year-old off-spinning all-rounder, is also one of the most high profile practising Muslims in British public life and a representative of a community that has often felt stigmatised following recent terror attacks in Manchester and London. There is such negativity in the media around Islam but when I play cricket for England I dont have to say anything, Ali added.Im hoping people look at me and other Muslims and think: Actually, it will be all right. Theyre not too bad.Meanwhile Ali, who made his name as a batsman, was hailed as an unsung hero by former England captain Alastair Cook.England are now 2-1 up against South Africa ahead of the fourth and final Test starting in Manchester on Friday.Ali is the leading bowler on either side with 18 wickets -- including a 10-wicket haul in Englands series-opening win at Lords where he also made 87.It has been an amazing series for Mo, he is a legend, opening batsman Cook told BBC Radio Fours Today programme. He is the unsung hero in one sense. He came into the side a few years ago when I was captain as a guy who could balance the side and bowl a little bit of off-spin and now he is the leading wicket-taker in the series. His off-spin is actually very good, hes not (former England off-spinner) Graeme Swann but his record is improving all the time.

Roland-Jones ready to 'start from scratch'

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Toby Roland-Jones has insisted his dream England debut will be put to one side when he next plays Test cricket. The 29-year-old Middlesex seamer took eight wickets, including twice removing star batsman Hashim Amla cheaply, during Englands 239-run win over South Africa in the third Test at The Oval. That left England 2-1 up in the series with just the fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting Friday, to come. But Roland-Jones, whose hat-trick against Yorkshire sealed Middlesexs County Championship title triumph last season, is knows that one good return is no guarantee of future success.I approach every game in the same way, Im someone who looks to be as simplistic as possible in the way that I approach and my processes for bowling, Roland-Jones told reporters at Manchesters Old Trafford on Wednesday. Its a case of reverting back to type, starting from scratch again and hopefully doing what I can to try and help the team win up here at Old Trafford. But after a heel injury to Durham fast bowler Mark Wood finally gave Roland-Jones his chance after hed twice before been in the Test squad without getting a cap, he was understandably proud of his debut.(It was) nice to have a day or so just to process everything, he said. Obviously winning a game in any England side is always going to be a pretty special feeling on debut. From a personal point of view it was pretty exciting game to be a part of and I was pretty happy with the way that I performed.

Bangladesh seek Australian inside knowledge for Tests

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh have set their sights on winning both upcoming Tests against Australia and should get some inside knowledge from former Aussie leg spinner Stuart MacGill, according to coach Chandika Hathurusingha.MacGill is close to joining another Australian, Mark ONeill, on the Bangladesh backroom staff for the tour by the world number three-ranked nation.Australia are due to arrive on August 18 for their first Test series in Bangladesh since 2006, if a pay dispute between their players and Cricket Australia is resolved in time. The two Tests will be followed by a Bangladesh tour of South Africa for two Tests and three one-day internationals in September-October.Bangladesh are looking to build on a year in which they recorded their maiden Test wins over England and Sri Lanka, before reaching the Champions Trophy semi-final in June.We have made some progress in Test cricket. Now we have the game-plan of winning in the sub-continent. We want to win the two Tests against Australia, Hathurusingha said.Bangladesh already have former West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh as fast bowling coach. Former Western Australia and New South Wales all-rounder ONeill has joined as batting consultant and MacGill is set to follow. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has not confirmed the appointment of MacGill, who took 208 wickets in 44 Tests for Australia. But Hathurusingha insisted he would stay for at least the Australia and South Africa campaigns.MacGill is here for three months to see, and if he is happy and the players are benefiting, it will be long-term, said Hathurusingha. We didnt have a spin bowling coach since (Ruwan) Kalpage left us. We need that help, as thats a specialised area, he said.Working, for me, is easier because all these guys are good coaches and they know what they are doing. The first Test against Australia is at Dhakas Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium from August 27. The second starts in Chittagong on September 4.Australia were to play two Tests in Bangladesh in October 2015 but the tour was cancelled after a wave of attacks by Islamist extremists in the Muslim-majority nation.

World Cup hero Ranatunga stops watching Sri Lanka

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga on Wednesday lambasted the countrys cricket leaders and said he had stopped watching the ailing national team.Ranatunga, 53, said he was also disillusioned with the government of which he is a minister because it failed to protect the game.Frankly, I dont watch cricket anymore, Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to a World Cup triumph in 1996, told AFP. I read about it in the newspapers but I dont watch cricket.Since retiring, the sports star has entered politics and was an unelected cricket administrator in 2008.I am disappointed about cricket since the last elections, he said.Ranatunga and his brother stood for the top two posts on the Sri Lankan cricket board in January last year but were easily beaten by Thilanga Sumathipala and his team.Ranatunga, who is the petroleum minister, is pushing for the ousting of the leadership and the appointment of an interim committee to administer the game.He said he had asked authorities to intervene in Sri Lanka Cricket but has had no response.I thought OK, if the government thinks this is right -- and I am part of this government -- I tried to take a step back and allowed them to run. They (the board) has messed up everything. No one is willing to listen to me.Ranatunga has not missed much in stopping watching the national side. Sri Lanka lost a home one-day series to Zimbabwe last month and were hammered in the first Test against India at the weekend.Last month Ranatunga demanded an investigation into the countrys 2011 World Cup final defeat by India amid allegations of match-fixing.Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera has said he was willing to order a probe if there was a written complaint.

The mumbling of Facebook in a subtle way

Posted:

(Web Desk) — A robot expert said the revelation that Facebook machines had spoken in their own language was exciting — but also incredibly scary.UK Robotics Professor Kevin Warwick said: “This is an incredibly important milestone, but anyone who thinks this is not dangerous has got their head in the sand.”“We do not know what these bots are saying. Once you have a robot that has the ability to do something physically, particularly military bots, this could unequivocally be lethal.“If one says, ‘Why not do this,’ and the other says ‘Yes’ and it’s a military bot, you have a serious situation.“This is the first recorded communication but there will have been many more unrecorded.”“Smart devices right now have the ability to communicate and although we think we can monitor them, we have no way of knowing.”Most notably, Stephen Hawking has already warned against the dangers of deferring to Artificial Intelligence.Keeping in view, the incident closely resembles the plot of The Terminator wherein a robot becomes self-aware and starts waging a war on humans. The Facebook incident apparently echoes of the same storyline to movie; The Terminator. One can safely imagine the situation pertains to hegemonic control of electronic devices. This would be considered a threat to humanity after subduing nature by man partly. With the increase of human tendency to the gadgets or other electronic devices, man is losing his intelligence gradually by installing that into robots. The doom day is seemingly near when robots would be more morally correct than that of humans in the theory of Man vs Machine. Moreover, Facebook researchers, in New York, have recently set up “chatbots” Alice and Bob in a bid to develop automated trouble-shooters for social media networks.Let us see how far productivity of it becomes in the time to come.
