Amir takes five for Championship leaders Essex

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistans Mohammad Amir took five for 18 as English County Championship leaders Essex had the better of the opening day in a First Division encounter away to Yorkshire at Scarborough on Sunday. The left-arm fast bowlers first five-for for Essex in just his second Championship match was instrumental in Yorkshire being skittled out for a meagre 113.Essex ended the first day on 188 for five, a lead of 75 runs, with captain Ryan ten Doeschate 61 not out.The 25-year-old Amir, along with then Pakistan captain Salman Butt and pace partner Mohammad Asif, was banned in 2010 for deliberately bowling no-balls as part of a spot-fixing scam during that years Lords Test against England, with all three players later jailed by an English court. But since his return to Pakistan duty in January last year, Amir has again become a regular in all three international formats. He returned impressive figures of three for 16 in six overs as Pakistan upset the form book to thrash arch-rivals India by 180 runs in the final of the Champions Trophy one-day international tournament at The Oval in June.Prior to Pakistans tour, of England last year, former England captain Alastair Cook said all match-fixers should be banned for life to protect crickets integrity.Cook, still an England opener, has spent his whole county career with Essex. But Amir, speaking after joining Essex following his Champions Trophy campaign, insisted in June that he had no problems with his new team-mate.I met him the first day when I arrived and he was very nice, said Amir of Cook.No (there are no issues between us), nothing. Hes always nice and always very supportive.

Ali puts England in sight of South Africa series win

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Moeen Alis dashing fifty all but put the fourth Test beyond South Africas reach as England moved towards a series win at Old Trafford on Sunday. When rain ended the thirds play at 1615 GMT, England were 224 for eight in their second innings -- a lead of 360 runs -- with Ali 67 not out.South Africa already needed to set a new ground record if they were to end this four-match series all square at 2-2, with Englands 294 for four against New Zealand in 2008 the most any side have yet made to win in the fourth innings of a Test at Old Trafford.Off-spinner Ali has been a thorn in South Africas side with both bat and ball this season. This innings meant hed now scored 200 runs and taken 20 wickets in the series, with Ali the first England player to perform that double since Andrew Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes.Ali made South Africa pay for Dean Elgar dropping him on 15 when a low slip chance off left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj did not stick. He may come in at No 8 for England but Ali has spent most of his career with Worcestershire as a top-order batsman.Ali, who bats left-handed, was especially severe on Maharaj, hitting him for three resounding sixes. The second of those, a straight drive that saw Ali complete a 49-ball fifty -- was caught on the England dressing-room balcony by wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow to the delight of the crowd. We needed a bit of momentum and it came off for me, Ali told Sky Sports. Sometimes you have to take the odd risk.England are bidding for a first home Test series win over South Africa since 1998, with Root seeking a victory in his first Test series as England captain.South Africa resumed on 220 for nine and were soon all out for 226 when Stuart Broad dismissed last man Duanne Olivier. That gave England a healthy first-innings lead of 136.Oliviers exit meant James Anderson, Englands all-time leading wicket-taker -- was denied a maiden five-wicket Test innings haul on his Lancashire home ground. But figures of four for 38 in 17 overs gave Anderson, whod struck four times from the newly-named James Anderson End on Saturday, his best innings return in seven Tests at Old Trafford.South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel then removed both Alastair Cook (10) and Tom Westley (nine) with the aid of gully catches.Keaton Jennings, dropped on nought, fell for just 18 when he edged a cut off Kagiso Rabada to first slip Hashim Amla.It was the latest in a run of low scores -- the South Africa-born opener managed just 127 runs in four Tests this series at an average of 15.88 -- that have left Jennings at risk of being dropped for the start of Englands upcoming three-Test series at home to the West Indies, which precedes an Ashes tour of Australia.Dawid Malan, out for scores of one and 10 on Test debut during Englands 239-run victory in the third Test at The Oval, was also looking to cement his place after falling for 18 in the first innings of this match. But the Middlesex left-hander, born in London but brought up in South Africa, exited for six -- having been dropped on five -- when caught via bat and pad at short leg off Maharaj.Root (49) and Ben Stokes (23), however, then shared a valuable stand of 57.They both fell to paceman Olivier, only playing this match after back injuries ruled out both Vernon Philander and Chris Morris.Olivier, who took an impressive three for 38 in total, insisted South Africa could yet achieve a remarkable win.If we can bowl them out for 380, I still believe it is possible, he said. England batted really well but we still have a chance. It is going to be difficult but it should be -- its Test cricket.

Renault to sign joint venture deal in Iran: ministry source

Posted:

TEHRAN (AFP) - French carmaker Renault will sign a long-awaited deal on Monday to build more than 150,000 cars a year in Iran, a source close to the countrys industry ministry told AFP.Unlike its chief competitor PSA, which makes Peugeots and Citroens, Renault never fully quit Iran during the sanctions period and already makes some 200,000 cars a year there. But it had to put a brake on its growth plans until Iran concluded a nuclear deal with world powers that came into force in January 2016.The new deal puts Renault in partnership with Irans Negin Khodro and the governments Industrial Development and Renovation Organisation (IDRO).Renault will hold a 60-percent stake, Negin Khodro will have 20 percent and IDRO 20 percent, the source said, without giving a figure on how much money is being invested.Negotiations were painstaking, with Renault reportedly reluctant to meet Iranian requirements to source 40 percent of their parts from local manufacturers, which have struggled to keep up with international standards.Renault officials believe that since their company is directly investing in local production, it should not be compelled to work with Iranian parts makers, IDRO chief Mansour Moazami told the Donya-e-Eqtesad newspaper recently. The factory will be based at Saveh, around 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Tehran, and follows a preliminary deal signed in September by Industry Minister Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh during a visit to Paris.PSA, which quit the country when international sanctions hit in 2012, has been quick to rebuild its presence in Iran, which was the companys main engine of growth last year.It signed a 400-million-euro deal in June 2016 to build 200,000 Peugeots a year with Iran Khodro, and another with Irans SAIPA to build a similar number of Citroens.Overall production in Iran is expected to reach two million cars a year by 2020, up from 1.2 million in 2016.French firms have been at the forefront of rebuilding trade ties with Iran since the nuclear deal, with energy giant Total signing a billion-dollar gas deal last month despite mounting pressure from Washington to isolate the country.

Wenger calls for united front as Arsenal make shield statement

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsene Wenger pleaded with Arsenal fans to stay united after his side made a statement of intent with their Community Shield victory over Chelsea on Sunday. After spending much of last season under fire from supporters frustrated by Arsenals travails, Gunners boss Wenger hopes the new campaign is far less turbulent affair.Despite winning the FA Cup at the end of last term, Wengers decision to sign a new contract proved a polarising move among the Arsenal faithful, who remain angered by their teams failure to qualify for this seasons Champions League.Wenger has already been subjected to a fan invading the pitch in an attempt to abuse him during a pre-season friendly and, against that troubled backdrop, the Frenchman was relieved to start the new season with a morale-boosting win over champions Chelsea at Wembley.A 4-1 penalty shoot-out victory rewarded Arsenal for an encouraging display in the 1-1 draw and Wenger was quick to call for unity in the stands ahead of Fridays Premier League opener against Leicester.I would like they stand behind the team as we might go through some very good periods and some not so good periods, he said.We want to be united and together throughout the season.Every game is a battle in the Premier League, like today. It is a dream to make the fans happy, a difficult dream but we try hard.Wenger has now won the Community Shield seven times, but it is seven years since Manchester United became the last winners of the prestigious friendly to go on to lift the Premier League trophy. After a strong first half, Arsenal fell behind to a Victor Moses goal in the 46th minute. But Chelsea had Pedro sent off in the closing stages and Arsenal equalised through new signing Sead Kolasinacs 82nd minute header.Well, I dont know if it was a sending off or not but at that moment we were dominating, Wenger said.We had some difficult moments at the start of the second half but after that we dominated. We always looked dangerous.Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was unhappy with referee Bobby Madley after seeing his side reduced to 10 men against Arsenal at Wembley yet again.Moses was sent off for diving in the Blues FA Cup final loss to the Gunners in May and Pedro saw red for a lunge on Mohamed Elneny. This is the second game, after the FA Cup, that we finish with 10 men, Conte fumed.I didnt see the situation. For me for this reason it is very difficult for me to say something about this decision.I heard there was clearly a penalty but I did not see. We are working, we are trying to do our best.We had a tough pre-season, between the six days until we start the league it is important to be focused on the next game.

Jadeja suspended from third Sri Lanka Test

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Ravindra Jadeja will miss Indias third and final Test against Sri Lanka after being slapped Sunday with a one-match ban by crickets governing body for dangerous play. The left-arm spinner was reprimanded for a dangerous throw in the second Test in Colombo. His all-round performance was credited by skipper Virat Kohli with leading the visitors to a series victory.Jadeja was also docked half his match fee and given six demerit points by the International Cricket Council over the incident, the second for the worlds top-Test bowler in a year.He fell foul of the umpires after the final delivery of the 58th over when, fielding off his own bowling, Jadeja threw the ball back at batsman Dimuth Karunaratne, who had not left his crease. The ball narrowly missed him in a manner which the on-field umpires determined as dangerous, the ICC said in a release.Jadeja took five wickets to help dismiss Sri Lanka for 386 as India triumphed by an innings and 53 runs. He will not play in the final match at Pallekele starting August 12.It was his second offence in a year, after copping a fine last October for running on the pitch during the Nagpur Test against New Zealand.Jadeja, who received the man of the match award for his bowling and unbeaten 70, admitted the latest offence and accepted the sanction proposed by West Indian match referee Richie Richardson.

He said that PTI would not let PML-N’s ill wishes come true.He asserted that Sharif brothers want to destroy judicial system and democracy by not wholeheartedly accept top court’s disqualification order.Khan said that former premier Nawaz had lost his grounds to be the leader of the House the day his corruption was exposed.NAB was ordered by the top court on July 28 to file five references against Sharif family, three out of which are against Nawaz Sharif.

12 killed in Nigeria church shooting: sources

Posted:

WARRI (AFP) - Gunmen stormed a Catholic church in a town in southeast Nigeria early Sunday, killing 12 worshippers, hospital sources and witnesses said. The attack took place at around 6am at St. Philips church in Ozubulu, near the city of Onitsha, witnesses said.So far, 12 persons have been confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary here while several persons are receiving medical attention, a staff worker at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where the victims were admitted, told AFP.Several worshippers with gunshot wounds were receiving treatment at the hospital, the source said.Witnesses said five gunmen in masks stormed the church and opened fire on worshippers. They feared that up to 20 people may have died.In contrast, Anambra State Police Commissioner Garba Umar said the attacker was a lone gunman, who went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding worshippers.Witness Chukwuma Emeka said he had just stepped out of the church to stretch his legs when I heard gunshots and screaming and people running inside. When the chaos subsided I went inside, I saw my fellow church members dead in a pool of their own blood and many others were screaming in pain.Security agents were said to have cordoned off the church.

Morkel double rocks England in fourth Test

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Morne Morkel checked Englands progress with two wickets as he led a South Africa fightback in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday.England were 53 for two in their second innings, a lead of 189 runs, at lunch on the third day.Keaton Jennings, dropped on nought, was 17 not out and England captain Joe Root 13 not out after Morkel had removed Alastair Cook and Tom Westley on his way to figures of two wickets for 22 runs in eight overs.England were bidding for a first home Test series win over South Africa since 1998 at 2-1 up with one to finish in this four-match contest.Root was also in search of a victory in his first Test series as England skipper.South Africa-born Jennings came into this innings under huge pressure for his place after averaging a mere 16.40 in Test cricket since a hundred on debut against India at Mumbai in December. There had been widespread speculation that another low score in this innings would see the opener dropped for the first of Englands upcoming three-Test home series against the West Indies, which precedes an Ashes tour of Australia. And the 25-year-old Durham left-hander, sometimes guilty of defending with an open bat face, was almost out for a duck when he edged a good length ball from Kagiso Rabada that cut away off the pitch to third slip where a diving Dean Elgar could not cling onto the chance despite getting both hands to the ball.Instead it was Cook, Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer, who fell first. The former captain had made 10 when, driving away from his body, he edged fast bowler Morkel to Theunis de Bruyn in the gully.Cooks Essex team-mate Westley then managed just nine in his fourth innings at this level before, playing slightly across the line to Morkel, he too was caught in the gully, this time by substitute Aiden Markram. The towering Morkel, whod so often bowled well this series without fair reward, had taken two wickets for eight runs in 18 balls to leave England 30 for two -- a lead of 166.South Africa then wasted a review after Jennings, on eight, well forward and outside off stump, padded up to left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.Earlier, James Anderson -- Englands all-time leading wicket-taker -- was denied a maiden five-wicket Test haul on his Old Trafford home ground after the Proteas resumed on 220 for nine.Stuart Broad had No 11 Duanne Olivier caught off a top-edged hook by Jonny Bairstow, who on Saturday had made a valuable 99 and claimed his 100th dismissal as a Test wicket-keeper.One consolation for Anderson, whod struck four times from the newly-named James Anderson End on Saturday, was that an innings return of four for 38 in 17 overs was his best in seven Tests on his Lancashire home ground, surpassing his four for 118 against New Zealand in 2008.

Lashkar-e-Taiba behind Hindu pilgrim murders: Indian police

Posted:

SRINAGAR (AFP) - Indian police said Sunday a Pakistan-based Islamist militant group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks was responsible for last months killing of eight Hindu pilgrims in Kashmir.Police said an investigation had concluded that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Kashmiri accomplices were behind the July 10 attack that saw militants open fire on a bus carrying Hindus on the annual Amarnath pilgrimage.Lashkar was involved and the accused have been identified, Inspector General of Police Muneer Ahmed Khan told reporters in Anantnag district in Indian-administered Kashmir.Once the investigation was started it was revealed that... a Pakistani militant of Lashkar along with two other militants and one local Kashmiri Lashkar militant carried out the attack.Three others who provided logistical support to the militants, including hiding places and vehicles, had been arrested. The July shooting was the worst such attack in the divided Himalayan region since 2000, when gunmen fired on a group of Hindu pilgrims and killed 32 people including two police officers.Khan said the militants had carefully plotted to attack any police or tourist vehicle that crossed their path on the evening of the assault. They had kept separate code words for tourist and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) vehicles... It was purely an act of terrorism carried out with an aim to spread fear, he said.LeT has been blamed for a string of deadly attacks inside India, most notably the Mumbai carnage in November 2008 when heavily armed gunmen battled commandos on the streets of the financial capital. It took the authorities three days to regain full control of the city and New Delhi has long said there is evidence that official agencies in Pakistan were involved in plotting the attack.Islamabad denies the charge.Rebel groups, including LeT, have for decades fought Indian troops and police deployed in Kashmir, demanding independence or a merger of the former Himalayan kingdom with Pakistan.Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947, but both claim the territory in full.
