Usain Bolt safely into 100m final

LONDON (AFP) - Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt remained on track for a 12th world title after advancing to the final of the 100m at the World Championships in London on Saturday.Defending champion Bolt, who brings the curtain down on his glittering career at the end of this season, was pipped in his semi-final in a photo finish by American Christian Coleman, who clocked 9.97 seconds.Bolt and Coleman will be joined by respective teammates Yohan Blake, the 2011 world champion, and veteran Justin Gatlin, whose doping-tainted past again saw him jeered by the sell-out 60,000 crowd at the London Stadium.South African Akani Simbine, in 10.05sec, won the first semi just ahead of Gatlin.Blake raced to victory in the second in 10.04sec, a hundredth ahead of Britains Reece Prescod.Su Bingtian of China and Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut clinched the two best third-place finishers to round out the final scheduled for 1945 GMT.

Indian right-wing leader elected vice-president

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indias lawmakers on Saturday elected a veteran leader from the ruling right-wing party as the countrys next vice-president, boosting Prime Minister Narendra Modis political standing.Venkaiah Naidu, 68, secured 516 parliamentary votes to pip rival Gopalkrishna Gandhi -- the 72-year-old grandson of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi -- who received 244 votes, according to polling officials.Gandhi was hoisted for the contest by Congress and several other smaller opposition parties.Naidu, considered close to Modi, held the post of a federal minister before being nominated as vice president.I promise to uphold the constitution and the high standards set by my esteemed predecessors, Naidu said on Twitter.Its an honour for me to become Vice President from a family of an ordinary farmer. Ayesha Ahad's allegations are baseless: Hamza Shehbaz spokesperson

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Spokesperson of Hamza Shehbaz responded to the allegations leveled by Ayesha Ahad on Saturday saying her press conference was a pile of lies.He called it a reaction to Ayesha Gulalai’s allegations of sexual harassment against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, adding that the claims leveled against Hamza Shehbaz are baseless. He said such allegations cannot overshadow the questions raised by Ayesha Gulalai.Talking about the press talk, he said Ayesha Ahad has been brought into light by PTI leaders and was created during the 2013 general elections.“Imran Khan couldn’t even clearly reject the allegations even once. PTI should ask its leader to prove innocence rather than imposing allegations on others in reaction,” it was stated.Discussing Ayesha Ahad’s case, he said the case was taken to court in 2012 while she was declared a liar by court in February, 2014. Those who brought Ayesha Ahad for press conference should look at their own character, he stressed.

State of emergency extended in Canada's fire-hit west

MONTREAL (AFP) - Firefighters were battling more than a hundred blazes in western Canada on Saturday as authorities in British Colombia province were forced to extend a state of emergency for a second time.Officials said the state of emergency would remain in effect until August 18 to ensure the continued flow of resources to fight the forest fires and protect the public.The state of emergency was first put into effect July 7, and extended for the first time on July 19.Most of the 46,000 people who were forced to flee during that period have been able to return to their homes, but 7,000 are still subject to evacuation orders, the authorities said.The provincial government says it will provide Can$ 600 per family forced to evacuate every two weeks until they are able to go home.As of Saturday, there were still 122 active fires in British Columbia. Some 3,800 firefighters, including 600 from other Canadian provinces, have been mobilized. And Mexico said it would send 108 firefighters to help out as well.Since April, more than 500,000 hectares (1.3 million acres) have been blackened by 868 forest fires in British Columbia.

Court subjected the ruling that matter was out of its jurisdiction and cannot give any verdict on the case. The Judge of Session court announced the decision on 3rd February, 2014. Ayesha Ahad Malik requested for provision of security to be made part of court’s order.Ayesha Ahad did not proceed with the case and nor did she pursue the case in Session and High Court.Ayesha Ahad Malik is daughter of PML-Q leader and film producer Ahad Malik who was also a former MPA of PML-N. Ayesha Ahad Malik is also known as Ayesha Iqbal.Ahad Malik was owner of AHAD Tower. In June, 2011 Punjab government declared the high-rise construction as illegal, irregular and against the building by-laws.

Iran's Rouhani sworn in as tensions simmer over nuclear deal

TEHRAN (AFP) - Irans President Hassan Rouhani warned the US against tearing up the nuclear deal as he was inaugurated for a second term Saturday, but he also faces challenges closer to home amid accusations he is rolling over to conservatives.Rouhani met with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini before the ceremony and called for greater efforts to safeguard the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in the face of new US sanctions.Iran will not be the first to violate the nuclear deal... but nor will it stay silent when the United States fails to respect its commitments, he told the packed parliament hall.Iran has proved that it will respond to respect with respect, and to sanctions and threats with an appropriate response and with resistance, he added.Some of Irans older friends, including Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, also attended the ceremony which came two days after Rouhani was officially sworn in by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.The emir of Qatar, which has fallen out with its Gulf allies in part over ties to Iran, was notably absent, despite attending Rouhanis last inauguration in 2013.- Reformist criticism -But among Iranians, the real attention was on who would be named to Rouhanis new cabinet.He has already been barraged with criticism over indications that women would again be entirely absent and that his reformist allies would barely be represented.Rouhanis last government had three women among a large cohort of vice-presidents, but they lacked ministerial roles that would require approval by parliament.It was the reformists that allowed him to win the elections in 2013 and 2017... he must listen to those who supported him, Rassoul Montajabnia of the reformist National Confidence party told the Arman newspaper.Rouhani won a convincing victory over hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi in the May presidential election, vowing to continue rebuilding ties with the West and easing social restrictions at home.That helped win over the reformists -- whose candidates dropped out of the last two elections to ensure his victory.Rouhani created a lot of expectation and now there is a sense that he is retreating from his promises, said Ali Shakourirad, head of the reformist Peoples Unity Party.The absence of women was down to pressure from religious conservatives behind the scenes, Shakourirad said.Rouhani didnt want to make his task any more complicated than it already is, he told AFP.The final line-up is due to be announced in coming days, and must then be approved by parliament.- Backroom bargaining -Despite the furore, the reshuffle is not expected to touch big names such as Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Oil Minister Bijan Namadar Zanganeh.The main ministers are very likely to stay in place, said Henry Smith, Iran analyst with consultancy Control Risks.Rouhani will have a fairly smooth time getting parliament to approve his appointees. Hes been doing back and forth consultations with the necessary power centres -- the parliament speaker, supreme leader, the Revolutionary Guards -- and I dont think youll see a significant change in economic or indeed social policy, he added.Despite his efforts to build backroom consensus, hardliners have given Rouhani a rough ride since his election, perhaps worried at the growing strength of the reformists.The arrest of his brother on corruption charges was interpreted by some as a shot across the bow by the hardline judiciary.Rouhani also triggered a war of words with the Revolutionary Guards after criticising their outsized role in the economy, although analysts say this is part of a cautious realignment of Irans policies to balance its security priorities with the need to attract investment.Rouhani has no interest in pushing the Revolutionary Guards totally out of the economy. Its about creating enough space so Iran can get the foreign investment and technology it needs, said Smith.Investment has belatedly started to arrive in the wake of the 2015 nuclear deal that eased sanctions in exchange for curbs on Irans nuclear programme, notably through last months billion-dollar gas deal with Frances Total and Chinas CNPC.Billions more are needed to jump-start the stagnant economy and tackle a jobless rate of 12.7 percent.But with Washington imposing yet more sanctions this week, Irans re-engagement with the world remains largely stalled.The problem is Iran feels the need to react to these moves by the US, which just give the US fuel, said Smith.Mogherini held a meeting ahead of the inauguration with Zarif, who criticised European governments for their support of US calls for UN action in response to an Iranian satellite launch on July 27.This is the wrong path, Zarif said.

He further said that no one should feel intimidated as there is no political agenda behind judicial verdicts.Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said that session judges carry huge responsibility on their shoulders to decide the cases.Justice Shah is the 45th and current Chief Justice LHC. He was elevated to the bench as additional judge in September of 2009 and confirmed as justice of LHC. He took oath as Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court on 28 June 2016.Justice Shah recently finished the ban on Indian dramas, which were aired on Pakistani TV channels.

PML-N announces new schedule, route for Nawaz's Lahore visit

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - In a fresh turn of events, ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has changed his schedule and route of his Lahore visit.The ex-Prime Minister will travel from Islamabad to Lahore on coming wednesday (9th August). The development comes as the ousted leader seeks to garner public support after court ruling in Panama case.The decision regarding the change in schedule and route was taken after consultation during meeting of PML-N leadership.Majority of PML-N party leadership present in the meeting insisted on making changes regarding schedule and route. The ex-PM found the suggestion to be valid and agreed to make changes in plan. The purpose behind the new decision was the approach to gather as much public support due to prevalance of PML-N vote in the constituencies located along the G.T. Road.In the opinion of PML-N leaders, the new approach will allow for successful show of power.Senator Asif Kirmani, ex-advisor to former Prime Minister said that the PML-N caravan will depart at 09:00 a.m., from Islamabad to destination of Lahore. He further said that massive preparations are being made for the celebration of receiving the ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

(Web Desk) – Just because you are in school should not be reason enough to deter you from applying to one of the most coveted jobs in the world – that of NASA’s planetary protection officer.According to CNN, NASA’s search for its next real-life guardian of the planet attracted the attention of a fourth-grader who sent in an application as a job aspirant.The space agency had begun looking for its new planetary protection officer this week. According to NASA, the job would require someone capable of guarding the planet from microbial contamination from other planets.Quick to answer the call was a “Guardian of the Galaxy”. Jack Davis wrote a handwritten letter to apply for the most sought after job.I may be nine but I think I would be a fit for the job, the letter read. He went on to list his interstellar work experience. I have seen almost all the space and alien movies I can see, the 9-year-old explained. I have also seen the show Marvel Agents of Shield and hope to see the movie Men in Black.While he may be young, there’s nothing quite like the ability to learn quickly and apply new concepts. Im great at video games, he said. It’s also about protecting other planets and moons from our germs as we responsibly explore the Solar System, wrote James L. Green, director of NASA’splanetary science division.We are always looking for bright future scientists and engineers to help us, so I hope you will study hard and do well in school, Green said.The protection officer’s slot is currently taken by Catharine Conley, who according to CNN, is listed as NASA’scurrent planetary protection officer.
