Root leads England rally against West Indies

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - England captain Joe Root threatened to make the West Indies pay dearly for giving him another reprieve in the second Test at Headingley after rival skipper Jason Holder starred with both bat and ball.England were 171 for three in their second innings at stumps on Sundays third day, a lead of two runs, after the tourists had posted an impressive first-innings total of 427.Root, dropped on 10, was 45 not out, with Dawid Malan unbeaten on 21.Their unbroken stand was so far worth 77 runs.Pace-bowling all-rounder Holder, who had earlier made a valuable 43, captured the key wicket of Alastair Cook and then removed Tom Westley on his way to stumps figures of two for 44 in 17 overs. The position were in is pretty decent, Holder told Sky Sports. The first hour tomorrow is crucial. We cant let Root get into his flow and we have to hold our chances.England, facing a large first-innings deficit of 169 runs, saw Cook and Mark Stoneman, who along with fellow batsmen Westley and Malan is looking to cement his Test place ahead of the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia, start steadily.Stoneman did, however, hit three fours off as many balls from Kemar Roach. But the more defensive Cook fell for 23 to end a stand of 58 as Holder, maintaining a probing line, eventually found the left-handers outside edge and had him caught behind.Westley should have been run out for six after a mix-up with Stoneman. He failed to cash in though, falling for eight when caught behind driving loosely at Holder. But Stoneman, hit on the left hand by Holder on 35, completed a maiden Test fifty in his third innings at this level. The 30-year-old left-hander was bowled soon afterwards, however, for 52 by an excellent delivery Shannon Gabriel delivery that pitched in line and hit off stump, with England then 94 for three.Trying to bend my hand in the glove, I thought somethings not right -- I was worried and fearing the worst, said Stoneman. But the physio got it straight back in and I was good to go.Theres something there for the bowlers and it was a case of grinding it out.Malan had a lucky break on four when the West Indies opted against reviewing a rejected caught behind appeal off Gabriel, although technology indicated a thin edge. While the West Indies batting and bowling has improved markedly this match, their fielding remains fallible. For the second time in the match they dropped Root early in his innings when he fended at the luckless Roach only for Kyle Hope to floor the gully chance.Root, dropped on eight en route to 59 in Englands first-innings 258, followed up Sunday with several fours. But when he missed a legside clip off Holder on 35, he was given out lbw.Root, however, reviewed immediately and was spared when replays indicated the ball was missing leg stump.Holder was again unfortunate when his lbw appeal against left-hander Malan was rejected by umpire S Ravi, with a review showing it was umpires call.West Indies innings represented a remarkable turnaround given they had been dismissed for just 168 and 137 during an innings and 209-run defeat at Edgbaston last week in the first of this three-Test series. They resumed on 329 for five, a lead of 71, only for James Anderson to then take two wickets in two balls as Shai Hope was caught behind for his overnight 147 to end a brilliant maiden Test century, with Shane Dowrich held by second slip Root.Anderson led the attack with five for 76 in 29 overs and is now a mere three wickets away from becoming the first England bowler to take 500 in Tests. But Holder survived Andersons hat-trick ball and, in partnership with Jermaine Blackwood, who made 49, he frustrated England in an eighth-wicket stand of 75.

Stoneman ignores Ashes hype against Windies

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - Englands Mark Stoneman said the pressure of a tense clash against the West Indies meant there was no room in his head for Ashes thoughts after compiling a maiden Test fifty at Headingley on Sunday. The Surrey opener, who had to overcome a finger dislocation, fell soon afterwards for 52 on an absorbing third day of the second Test.Come the close, the match was finely balanced with England 171 for three in their second innings -- a lead of just two runs.Much appeared to depend yet again on Joe Root, with the England captain 45 not out on his Yorkshire home ground after being dropped on 10.Left-hander Stoneman is the 12th man to partner Alastair Cook at the top of the England order since former captain Andrew Strauss retired in 2012.The pressure on Stoneman, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan -- who occupy Englands problem batting positions of two, three and five -- has intensified ahead of an Ashes series in Australia that starts in November. But faced with a first-innings deficit of 169, the 30-year-old Stoneman responded well in what was just his third Test innings. He also needed the team physio to help straighten out a dislocated little left finger after he was struck by West Indies captain Jason Holder. But Stoneman said the pressure of the match situation had worked to his advantage. It helps remove any thoughts that might be in the back of your mind, the scrutiny you are under when youre playing Test cricket, especially early in your career, Stoneman told reporters. He added that worrying about whether he would be in the Ashes squad was a pointless exercise.Just getting here (to play for England) was a long enough road so to start trying to forecast anything beyond my next innings would be daft, explained the former Durham batsman.Holder, as well as making a mark on Stoneman, led from the front with both bat and ball on Sunday. His brisk 43 helped take the West Indies to 427 in their first innings. The pace-bowling all-rounder then dismissed both Cook and Westley as his side continued an impressive recovery after an innings and 209-run drubbing in the first Test at Edgbaston.Weve got three wickets so far, theyve only got a lead of two runs, so I think its important we hit our straps, said Holder, looking to lead the West Indies to their first Test-match win in England in 17 years.Id say (chasing) anywhere around 150 should be pretty decent. But the West Indies may yet rue missing Root for the second time in the match, having seen him make 59 in Englands first-innings 258 after he was dropped on eight. Its frustrating obviously, but its gone, said Holder.Hes been a little susceptible outside the off stump on the back foot and weve just got to hang in there and be a lot more patient because we can create some opportunities.

India clinch ODI series against Sri Lanka

Posted:

PALLEKELE (AFP) - Opener Rohit Sharmas sublime century combined with a maiden five-wicket haul by paceman Jasprit Bumrah powered India to a series-clinching win against Sri Lanka in the third one-day international on Sunday.Chasing 218 for victory, Sharma hit a 145-ball 124 not out to steer the visitors home in 45.1 overs, although unruly crowd behaviour delayed their six-wicket win in Pallekele.Angry home fans threw water bottles onto the field and play stopped as players walked off with India needing eight runs to win.The visitors rode on an unbeaten 157-run fifth-wicket stand between Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who made 67, to take a 3-0 lead in the five-match series. But it was man of the match Bumrah who set up the win for India after his career-best figures of 5-27 restricted Sri Lanka to 217-9 in 50 overs.Bumrahs got 11 wickets in three games, hes bowled really well, hes among our top short-format bowlers at the moment, Kohli said in praise of the 23-year-old.He hits the right areas, bowls at pace, and in the death overs hes like a fish in water, Kohli added.Sri Lankan fast bowlers hurt Indias reply with two early strikes including skipper Virat Kohli for one, leaving the visitors at 19-2.Sharma and Lokesh Rahul, who made 17, then tried to steady the chase with their 42-run partnership before spinner Akila Dananjaya turned on the heat.Dananjaya got Rahul and Kedar Jadhav for nought in his first two overs. But Sharma, who made 54 in the teams previous win, kept his cool amid the madness to register his 12th ODI hundred as he paired with Dhoni to thwart the Sri Lankan bowling attack.Small targets are always tricky. If it happens 2-3 times, it isnt an issue...Here it was just the case of the wicket being a bit more challenging, said Kohli.Rohit was outstanding, MS was great as well. These things happen, the guys will learn in the middle order...we have to be patient with them, he added.Earlier, Sri Lankas Lahiru Thirimanne scored a 105-ball 80 to give the total some respect after the Chamara Kapugedera-led side suffered from regular wicket-fall.Thirimanne put on a gritty 72-run stand with Test captain Dinesh Chandimal, who made a sedate 36, but the rest of the batting let the hosts down.Things didnt go to our plans. We discussed about not playing dot balls in the middle overs, but things didnt work out...260-275 would have been a challenging score, said Kapugedera.I enjoyed captaincy - it was pressure, but I enjoyed it, and hopefully we can win next time, Kapugedera, who was standing in for suspended captain Upul Tharanga, added.Sri Lankas worries were compounded with Chandimal suffering a hairline fracture to his thumb while negotiating a bouncer from fast bowler Hardik Pandya.Bumrah, who shared the new ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, got two early wickets in Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis after the hosts elected to bat first. The fourth ODI is slated for Thursday in Colombo.

Bangladesh spinners spoil strong day for Australia in Test

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs spinners spoilt a strong day for Australia Sunday, claiming two quick wickets after the hosts had been dismissed for 260 on the first day of the first Test.Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar took three wickets each to wrap up the Bangladesh innings despite half-centuries from Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan. But there was redemption for Bangladesh -- meeting Australia in a Test for the first time in over a decade -- when their spinners took two scalps in the final moments of the session. A third batsman was run out, leaving Australia precariously placed on 18-3 at stumps.David Warner was given a reprieve by the third umpire from a lbw decision off Mehedi Hasan, but the spinner trapped the left-hander the same way with the very next ball.Soumya Sarkar was responsible for a brilliant run out to remove Usman Khawaja for one in the next over, before left arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan dismissed nightwatchman Lyon for a duck.Opener Mat Renshaw remained unbeaten on six at stumps along with skipper Steve Smith, not out three. When the match got under way Australia looked unstoppable as Cummins rattled Bangladeshs top order with a fiery opening spell.Cummins struck in his first over when he dismissed Soumya Sarkar for eight, beating the left-hander with a short-pitched ball that took an edge and flew to Peter Handscomb at gully. In his next over he removed Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman for nought off successive deliveries to reduce Bangladesh to 10 for 3.But Shakib and Tamim came together to add 155 for the fourth wicket and lift the home teams score towards respectability.Tamim lofted Lyon for a six over extra cover, growing in confidence as he built the partnership with Shakib.Occasional spinner Glenn Maxwell finally broke it when he forced Tamim to cut one loose at backward point, where David Warner took the catch.Tamim, who like Shakib was playing his 50th Test, made 71.Shakib scored 84 including 11 fours before he was dismissed by Lyon on the stroke of tea, with Smith taking a sharp catch at first slip.It was quite challenging to bat out there. I think Tamim and I applied ourselves, said Shakib. It was an important partnership. We may be in the driving seat but we need to take seven more wickets. They have some batting left too, so we have to focus well. Every day gives you a new situation in Test cricket, he added.Agar trapped Mushfiqur Rahim leg-before for 18, a decision which the Bangladesh skipper unsuccessfully reviewed.Nasir Hossain (23) and Mehedi Hasan (18) provided brief resistance but were undone by Agar and Lyon respectively for Australia to expose the tail.Cummins finished with figures of 3-63, while off-spinner Lyon claimed 3-79 -- surpassing Richie Benauds Test haul of 248 wickets to become Australias second most successful spinner after Shane Warne. Its in the balance to be fair, Lyon said after the opening days play. You can probably look at Bangladesh who have the momentum at the moment. To lose the toss and bowl a team out for 260 or under 300 is always a good result for a bowling team. Its not ideal losing three wickets, but thats the game. Youve got to give them credit, they batted well, they bowled well, he said.Agar, playing his first Test in four years, did his part with 3-46 which included the final wicket of Shafiul Islam.

Werner double helps Leipzig floor Freiburg

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Germany striker Timo Werner netted twice as RB Leipzig came from behind to floor Freiburg 4-1 on Sunday and get their Bundesliga season on track. All four Leipzig goals came after the break as they roared back after a poor first half on the back of losing their opening match of the season 2-0 at Schalke last weekend.Werners goals were a timely reminder for Germany head coach Joachim Loew, who included the fleet-footed forward for World Cup qualifiers against the Czech Republic on Friday in Prague and against Norway in Stuttgart four days later.Werner and his forward partner Jean-Kevin Augustin were instrumental in turning the game around.Freiburg took a deserved lead at the Red Bull Arena when left winger Marco Terrazzino escaped his marker and Florian Niederlechner slotted home his cross on 24 minutes. But Leipzig flew out of the blocks for the second half and were level within three minutes as a corner by Emil Forsberg was headed home by Werner.Leipzig then took the lead when captain Willi Orban tapped home on 55 minutes after some good work by new signing Augustin, recruited from Paris Saint-Germain.The Frenchman raced down the right wing before firing in a cross which centre-back Orban simply had to tap home.Augustin then provided the killer pass which put Werner into space to slot home his second on 69 minutes and make it 3-1.Augustin made way for Portuguese midfielder Bruma on 76 minutes and just two minutes later the new signing from Galatasaray netted with a stunning shot from the edge of the area.To compound Freiburgs misery, midfielder Nicolas Hoefler was sent off inside the final 10 minutes after his foul on Forsberg saw him earn a second yellow.A fortnight before they make their Champions League debut at home to Monaco, the victory was a timely confidence booster for Leipzig. On Saturday, two goals from Robert Lewandowski sealed a 2-0 win for defending champions Bayern Munich at Werder Bremen.Borussia Dortmund are top of the fledgling table on goal difference from Bayern after a 2-0 win at home to Hertha Berlin, with goals by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nuri Sahin.

Houston battles floods, generated by Harvey, at least three dead

Posted:

HOUSTON (AFP) - Monster storm Harvey unleashed catastrophic flooding in Houston Sunday, turning streets in the largest city in Texas into raging rivers as trapped residents climbed to higher floors and the death toll crept up to at least three.Overwhelmed emergency services warned residents to head for high ground or climb onto rooftops -- not into attics -- so they could be seen by rescue helicopters. It is bad and growing worse, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who added that the storm -- a huge hurricane that first crashed ashore on the Gulf Coast late Friday -- had inflicted billions of dollars in damage.US President Donald Trump, who was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat, said he would visit the Lone Star State as soon as he could do so without causing disruption. The focus must be on life and safety, he said in a series of tweets about the disaster, his first major domestic challenge since taking office in January. At least three people have died since Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, spawning tornadoes and lashing east and central Texas with torrential rains. In Houston, a woman drowned when she left a car which had stalled in high water, city mayor Sylvester Turner said. Another man was found dead in a flooded Wal-Mart parking lot in Galveston, officials confirmed.Local officials said Saturday that one person was killed when a house caught fire in the Rockport area, where Harvey made landfall with sustained winds of 130 miles (215 kilometers) per hour.Houston began opening community centers to shelter people forced out of their homes, but the mayor appealed to residents to stay put and not call the 911 emergency line unless they faced a life-threatening situation.Do not get on the road. Even if theres a lull today, dont assume the storm is over, Turner said at a news conference. The best way to keep from being stranded is to stay off the streets.Rain measured in feetThe National Weather Service said about two feet (60 centimeters) of rain fell in Houston and nearby Galveston in a 24-hour period. If the highest floor of your home becomes dangerous ... get on the roof Houstons emergency management agency warned in a bulletin.Flooding was expected to worsen as the most powerful storm to hit the United States mainland since 2005 lingers over the area. This appears to be either the worst or one of the worst floods Houston has ever had. We are measuring it not in inches but in feet, Abbott told CBSs Face the Nation show.Harvey slowly weakened as it advanced, but it had the power to rip off roofs, flip mobile homes and leave hundreds of thousands of people in the dark on the Gulf Coast, home to some of the countrys most important oil refineries.More than a dozen tornado warnings were issued overnight for southeast Texas, including several in the Houston area.Hobby International, one of Houstons two airports, announced that all flights were canceled due to standing water on runways, while George Bush International was operating at limited capacity.Abbott said National Guard troops were deployed overnight in Houston, using high-clearance vehicles to help with rescues in inundated areas of the city of 2.3 million. Boats and helicopters also were being deployed. The Coast Guard has so far rescued at least 100 people from the air.Search and rescue operations were also underway in devastated coastal communities including Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas and Corpus Christi, a city of some 325,000 people, Abbott said.In Victoria, a town just north of Rockport, residents were shocked by the storms intensity. We didnt know it was going to be a Category Four storm so we thought well just ride it out, local resident Robby Villa told AFP.If I knew it was going to be what it came to be, I might have left sooner, he said.Landmark disasterAbbott visited a shelter for coastal evacuees late Saturday in the state capital Austin and handed out food, describing the damage to homes and property as sheer tragedy. Some of them had their homes mowed down. Some of them will not have a place to return to... It is our job to make sure they will be taken care of, he said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said there should be no illusions about the long-term impact. This disaster will be a landmark event, FEMA director Brock Long said on CNNs State of the Union, adding that the agency is gearing up for a two-year recovery effort.Oil industry preparedCoastal Texas is a fast-growing area, with some 1.5 million people moving into the region since 1999. It is also home to a large number of oil refineries and a number of major ports.US authorities said about 22 percent of crude production in the Gulf of Mexico, accounting for more than 375,000 barrels a day, was shut down as of Friday. But Abbott said the oil industry was well prepared. They hunkered down and were able to contain the facilities, and they have the ability to ratchet up back up there quickly, he said on Fox News Sunday, predicting a one- or two-week downturn.

Nadal, Federer, Sharapova take spotlight at US Open

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will try to add another Grand Slam success in their age-defying seasons while Maria Sharapova takes her comeback to the highest stage when the US Open begins Monday.World number one Nadal, back on top after more than three years, captured his 10th French Open in June for his 15th Grand Slam title while third-ranked Federer took the Australian Open and Wimbledon crowns, raising his record Slam total to 19.Its something that probably you and we dont expect to have that much success, but here we are, Nadal said. And we worked well. We worked with passion and we played well. So lets see how we finish season.Nadal, 31, and Federer, 36, have never faced each other on the New York hardcourts but could meet in the semi-finals.That would be fun for everybody involved, Federer said. Theres like 60-plus players in between us that dont agree we should make it to the semis. We have our work cut out there. I dont think were both thinking that far ahead.Federer opens against US teen Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday, the same day Nadal meets Serbian Dusan Lajovic in his first-round match.Ten victories to have that match. A lot of points and games to play, Nadal said of a possible semi-final with Federer. Now is not the moment to think about that. For me, I think about Lajovic. Thats my goal.Nadal could face Bulgarian seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov, coming off his biggest career title two weeks ago at Cincinnati, in the quarter-finals while Federers last-eight opponent could be Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem.Until this years revival, Federer had not won a Grand Slam title since Wimbledon in 2012. Nadals most recent major crown was at Roland Garros in 2014.You could foresee maybe Rafa and me would be back in some shape or form but maybe not quite like this, Federer said. I think were all a bit surprised, all the players, all the media, all the experts and fans.It has been a great year and I hope we can keep playing like this.Sharapovas great memoriesFor Sharapova, the Broadway stage shines a spotlight on her comeback and controversy. She served a 15-month ban after testing positive for the blood boosting drug meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open. Her comeback began in April at Stuttgart, although many rivals were unhappy she was given wildcards into events. The French Open denied her a wildcard and she missed Wimbledon with a thigh injury.Sharapova played only one US Open tuneup match before a forearm injury sidelined her, but she has practiced on the courts and taken inspiration from past success, notably a 2006 US Open title.Overall I think the inspiration is being here, really, Sharapova said in a video on the US Open website. So many great memories of the tournament, being a champion, coming back to it.The 30-year-old Russian has missed three of the past four US Opens, reaching the fourth round in 2014 in her most recent appearance.Sharapova faces a difficult test Monday in the night feature match at Arthur Ashe Stadium against world number two Simona Halep of Romania. But Sharapova is 6-0 lifetime against Halep, 10-0 in US Open first-round matches and has won 22 Grand Slam first-round matches in a row since the 2010 Australian Open. Its going to be a big challenge, first round of a Grand Slam, to face her, Halep said. She beat me six times. Maybe I will change this. I just want to do my best to try to win and of course to enjoy it. Its a big match. On the mens side, Germanys fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev faces Darian King of Barbados in his Grand Slam main draw debut while Croatian fifth seed Marin Cilic meets American Tennys Sandgren.US 10th seed John Isner, the top-ranked player in his quarter of the draw thanks to a reshuffling when Britains Andy Murray withdrew due to a hip injury, opens against Frances Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
