SpaceX to launch super-computer to space

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - SpaceX is poised to launch an unmanned cargo ship toward the International Space Station Monday, including a super-computer that could direct astronauts on future deep-space missions. The liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket, carrying the Dragon cargo ship, is planned for 12:31 pm (1631 GMT) from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The weather forecast is 70 percent favorable for launch. The mission is the 12th official trip for SpaceX, which has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to supply the astronauts living in orbit over 20 such back-and-forth journeys.About 10 minutes after launch, the rocket will attempt to make a controlled landing back on solid ground at Cape Canaveral, as part of SpaceXs ongoing effort to re-use rocket components after each take-off.If Mondays launch is delayed for any reason, the next attempt would have to wait until next week, due to a spacewalk planned for Thursday by Russian cosmonauts, who will deploy a series of satellites from the orbiting outpost. The Dragon is packed with 6,400 pounds (2,900 kilograms) of supplies, including a sophisticated super-computer made by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), called The Spaceborne Computer. The goal is to test the computer for one year to see if it can operate in the harsh conditions of space, about the same amount of time as it would take for astronauts to arrive at Mars.As astronauts travel millions of miles away, communications will become increasingly delayed. Messages from Mars to Earth would be delayed from between four minutes to 24 minutes one-way, depending on the distance between the planets, according to the European Space Agency.Such a long communication lag would make any on-the-ground exploration challenging and potentially dangerous if astronauts are met with any mission critical scenarios that theyre not able to solve themselves, said HPE senior vice president Alain Andreoli in a statement. The new super-computer aims to provide sophisticated onboard computing resources that are capable of extended periods of uptime, he added, describing the year-long effort as the first step in that direction.Another experiment on board is designed to help scientists study Parkinsons disease in greater detail in the hopes of finding better treatments for this degenerative disease.Un-impeded by gravity, protein crystals can grow larger in space, and scientists hope to use this environment to help them understand an important protein in Parkinsons disease, known as Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2).Until now, this protein has been difficult to study in Earth, according to researchers at the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which developed the research project.Other experiments on board include a stem cell investigation for growing new lung tissue, and equipment for growing vegetables in space.

Root warns England new boys to expect Ashes barrage

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Joe Root has warned his teams emerging young stars to expect a barrage of abuse which hits you like a train when they face old rivals Australia. For the likes of Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley, Dawid Malan, Toby Roland-Jones and Mason Crane, Englands Test series against the West Indies, which starts on Thursday, represents a golden chance to seal a first Ashes trip later this year.Root cant wait to lock horns with Australia on their own turf, but he knows the hostile reception from the Australian public can prove challenging for English cricketers. The England batsman admits his own experiences in 2013/14 -- when England were whitewashed and he was dropped for the only time in his career -- left a lasting impression.I think its important to warn them. You dont want to go out there and it just hit you like a train, Root said. You want to make sure youre fully aware of whats coming your way.I was slightly surprised. I thought they might give us a bit of banter but it was a bit more than that. There were a few chants from the crowd that were quite personal at times, quite offensive. It was very hostile, quite aggressive at times on and off the field. While Root is aware of what lies in store for England, he doesnt believe his side should fear the experience and urged them to revel in the electric atmosphere. The thing to remember, even if it doesnt seem it at the time, is its generally in good spirit and theyre just trying to create an atmosphere for their side, he said. When you get a full house and its rocking and the crowd are involved it makes a very entertaining spectacle to watch and also to play in.Its great if you can go out there with everyone against you and put in a match-winning performance.Root is a different player and a different man to the one who was scorched by the heat of Ashes battle four years ago. With the bat he has averaged 59.42 since being stood down for the Sydney Test, making 10 of his 12 career hundreds. With all that in mind he is happy to take his share of slings and arrows this time around, if there are any to spare once the crowd are finishing with their old sparring partner Stuart Broad. We all like a pantomime villain. Certain characters like Stuart thrive on that, so hopefully they pick a good villain who enjoys it and it works to our advantage, Root said. You cant choose who they pick on but its a challenge Test cricket throws up on occasion. If youre going to survive in it you have to find a way to deal with it.

India axe Yuvraj from limited-overs squad

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India on Sunday dropped veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh from the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka as the national selectors opted for youngsters in the 15-man squad.Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja along with pace spearhead Mohammed Shami were rested from the five one-day internationals and a single Twenty20 starting next week.Former captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni retained his place in the side that witnessed seven changes from their tour of the West Indies in June-July.The 35-year-old Yuvraj, who scored only 57 runs in three ODIs against West Indies, is fast losing favour as the teams middle order mainstay. The flamboyant left-handed all-rounder, who is a two-time World Cup winner, has represented India in 304 ODIs since making his debut against Kenya in 2000.Batsman Manish Pandey, who recently led India A to a tri-series triumph in South Africa, returned to the team along with Test opener Lokesh Rahul.Rookie spinners Axar Patel, who was added in the Test squad as cover for suspended Jadeja, and Yuzvendra Chahal made the cut.Jasprit Bumrah and uncapped Shardul Thakur will bolster the pace attack along with the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The visitors, who are in firm command of the ongoing third and final Test after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead, will play their first ODI on August 20.SquadVirat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma (vice captain), Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.

Pandya, Kuldeep put India on top in 3rd Test

PALLEKELE (AFP) - A blazing century from all-rounder Hardik Pandya and four wickets from spinner Kuldeep Yadav left India in total command of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka on Sunday.Kuldeep led an inspired bowling display with his left-arm wrist spin to help dismiss Sri Lanka for 135 in response to Indias 487, before the visitors enforced the follow-on in Pallekele in search of a series whitewash. The hosts were 19-1 at stumps on day two, still trailing India by 333 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne on 12 and nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara on nought were at the crease.Paceman Umesh Yadav had opener Upul Tharanga trudging back to the pavilion for seven after the left-handed batsman dragged a delivery, which was going away, onto his stumps. But it was Pandyas 96-ball 108 that paved the way for Indias dominance after resuming the day on 329-6.It was an ideal opportunity and obviously there was a teams goal which was to get them a 400-run target and we scored close to 490. I was taking a calculative risk, Pandya told reporters.I am pretty lucky to have such a team and such people who are supporting me and backing me all out, Pandya, who made his Test debut in the series opener in Galle, added.Kuldeep, another Indian rookie, then flattened the Sri Lankan batting in the hosts first innings, returning impressive figures of 4-40 in just his second Test. The 22-year-old turned on the heat to rattle the middle order and combined with fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to wipe out the tail in the final session.Off-spinner Ashwin took two wickets including the prized scalp of skipper Dinesh Chandimal, who top-scored with a gritty 87-ball 48.Pace spearhead Mohammed Shami also contributed two wickets, removing the Sri Lankan openers in the first five overs of the innings.Pandya, 23, also chipped in with his pace bowling to have former captain Angelo Mathews lbw for nought. But it was Pandyas batting blitz that tore apart the Sri Lanka attack as the right-hander hit 8 fours and 7 sixes after starting on his overnight score of one.He was finally out to spinner Lakshan Sandakan, who claimed his first five-wicket Test haul, on the third ball of the second session as Indias innings ended without adding to the lunch total.I always wanted to play Test cricket. Its name is Test because it is a difficult format; it tests your patience, fitness, temperament, said Pandya, who is already being compared to iconic Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev.Meanwhile Sri Lankas batting coach Hashan Tillakaratne gave no excuses for the teams poor batting performance, but said he hoped the boys will learn from their mistakes. Its a disappointing day. We batted so poorly today, I am sure the boys have realised where we went wrong (and) will come out with a better plan tomorrow, said the former batsman. There are so many things that you can say when the team is not doing too well. This is the time we must back these guys and give them confidence, he added.India are eyeing their first-ever series sweep in Sri Lanka after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in Colombo.

Hamburg stunned by 10-man minnows in German Cup

BERLIN (AFP) - Top-flight Hamburg were sensationally knocked out of the German Cup in the first round on Sunday, suffering a 3-1 defeat to third division side Osnabrueck.Hamburgs misery was compounded by the fact that Osnabrueck played most of the game with 10 men, after defender Marcel Appiah was sent off on 19 minutes. After taking the lead through a smash-and-grab goal from Halil Savran five minutes before half-time, the underdogs struck again through Marc Heider on the counter-attack with an hour played.Disastrous defending from Hamburg then allowed Ahmet Arslan to add a third in the 71st minute.Though Bobby Wood pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, it was too little too late for Hamburg. We have to be very self-critical, Hamburg sporting director Jens Todt told Sky.We had one man more than them for 70 minutes and we still couldnt win; we defended badly.RB Leipzig had an easier afternoon, reaching the second round with a 5-0 win against sixth-tier Dorfmerkingen.Goals at the beginning of each half from Marcel Sabitzer gave Leipzig a 2-0 lead, before Timo Werner, Yussuf Poulsen and Naby Keita added three more in quick succession.Hanover survived an early scare to beat fourth-tier SC Bonn. The top-flight club went behind to a Lars Lokotsch goal on 20 minutes, but goals from Niclas Fuellkrug, Kenan Karaman, Sebastian Maier and Martin Harnik saw them take a 6-2 victory.Fourth-tier Schweinfurt provided a further upset, knocking out second division SV Sandhausen with a 2-1 victory.Elsewhere, Greuther Fuerth and Bochm beat lower league opposition, while Union Berlin secured a 2-1 victory over Saarbruecken in extra-time.A late penalty saw FC Ingolstadt beat local rivals 1860 Munich, and Wolfsburg laboured to 1-0 win against Norderstedt.
