Broad proud to beat Botham's mark

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Stuart Broad paid tribute to the big influence of Ian Botham on his career after beating the England greats tally of Test wickets. The 31-year-old paceman produced one of the wicket-taking bursts for which he has become known with a spell of three for four in 11 balls as England hammered the West Indies inside three days to win the inaugural day/night Test in Britain by an innings and 209 runs at Edgbaston on Saturday. It left Broad with 384 Test wickets to outstanding all-rounder Bothams 383.Only new-ball partner James Anderson, who has 492 Test wickets to his credit, is now ahead of Broad in Englands all-time list.Broad, who has two Test hat-tricks to his credit, almost had a third on Saturday before Kemar Roach got his bat in the way.No that Broad had long to wait to go past Botham, who was commentating on the match for television, as two overs later he bowled Shane Dowrich.Broads links to Botham extend beyond his own impressive career. His father Chris Broad, a former opening batsman, played in the same England side as Botham and the pair both enjoyed a successful Ashes-winning tour of Australia in 1986/87.My dad made me watch On Top Down Under (the BBC video chronicling the tour) relentlessly -- 86-87, I was three months old (then) but I watched that throughout the early 90s.Botham reserved some of his most outstanding performances for Australia, notably during the 1981 Ashes series where he starred with both bat and ball, while Broad took his Test-best figures against Englands arch-rivals with a remarkable return of eight for 15 that set up an Ashes-clinching win at his Trent Bridge home ground two years ago.He is someone who has been a big influence on me, said Broad junior.Obviously, playing with my dad and watching some of his performances against Australia, he is a huge legend of English cricket but someone who has given a lot back to this team, actually.I was very fortunate to get my Test cap off him back in 2007. He is someone who obviously has an influence on us, the way he performed against Australia.Broad added: He is someone who is passionate about English cricket and you can tell he wants us to do well.I could tell he was genuinely proud and delighted Id managed to go past him and thats testament to him.And he said that well share a nice bottle of wine later in the week. If hes buying, thats quite excitingMeanwhile Chris Broad, now an International Cricket Council match referee, was delighted by his sons latest landmark display. Were all very proud, he told BBC Radio Fives Sportsweek programme. To get to a person like Ian Botham and his record is a monumental achievement. However, he did have some words of warning for Stuart.I heard (on Saturday) that he and Ian Botham were going to share a quiet drink -- well, I know what Ian Bothams quiet drinks are like...

Holder tells routed Windies to 'look in the mirror'

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder challenged his side to look themselves in the mirror after they suffered an innings and 209-run thrashing by England in the first Test at Edgbaston. The inaugural day/night Test in Britain was all over on Saturdays third day.Its been a tough few days - we were disappointing in this Test match. We lacked consistency when we bowled and we didnt put up any runs, Holder told reporters. We got beaten in three days and just werent up to scratch.Few had given the West Indies much chance ahead of the three-match series but even their sternest critics might have paused before suggesting they would lose 19 wickets in a day.Yet that is exactly what happened on Saturday, with the West Indies, who started the day at 44 for one, were shot out for 168 and 137 after being made to follow on.We have to regroup -- its only one Test, and we cant drop our heads down, said Holder. The series is not lost... I have to believe, (because) every team is beatable.(But) each player has to look themselves in the mirror and see where they can improve. The West Indies bowling was as poor as their batting, with England piling up 514 for eight declared as captain Joe Root, with 136, and his predecessor Alastair Cook (243) plundered runs against a hapless attack.Only Jermaine Blackwood, who made a defiant first-innings 79 not out and persevering paceman Kemar Roach, who bowled better than figures of two for 86 in 28 overs suggested, could take much from a match that left the men from the Caribbean still without a Test win in England since 2000.Now the West Indies only have a short turnaround before the second of a three-match series gets under way at Headingley -- Roots Yorkshire home ground -- on Friday.West Indies problems in Test cricket away from home are nothing new.Since 1997, excluding matches against the often struggling Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, they have won just three out of 87 Tests beyond the Caribbean, losing 67 and drawing 17.It is a sad statistic for a side that were Test crickets dominant force during the 1970s and 1980s.The current squad arrived in England without the experienced Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo and Darren Sammy -- the legacy of both a bitter dispute with West Indies cricket chiefs and the competing attractions of the lucrative Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament that is taking place at the same time as this Test series.West Indies are the reigning World Twenty20 champions and there are fears that Test cricket may never regain the pride of place it once enjoyed in the region.Johnny Grave, the English chief executive of what is now Cricket West Indies, accepted an awful amount of work was required to restore the teams Test fortunes.I think we are certainly best at the Twenty20 format, Grave told Sky Sports during Saturdays tea interval. Our system of producing cricketers allows us to compete at that level rather than the longer formats of the game, where the inadequacies of our system is really highlighted, added Grave, who made his name in cricket administration with London-based county Surrey and Englands Professional Cricketers Association.Jimmy Adams (a former West Indies captain), our new director of cricket and I have got an awful lot to do to put in place a really professional system underneath the mens international side to produce better cricketers.

Mominul back in Bangladesh squad for Aussie Test

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh Sunday brought back batsman Mominul Haque into their squad a day after his axing for the first Test against Australia created uproar on social media.Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan said he personally instructed selectors and team management to include Momimul, who holds the highest Test average of 46.88 by any Bangladeshi batsman having played a minimum of 20 innings. There was no reason Mominul should be dropped, Nazmul told a crowded press briefing in Dhaka.I have spoken (to selectors and coach Chandika Hathurusingha) why he was dropped. I think he became a victim of situation. I would say he has no reason to feel upset, he said.Batsman Mosaddek Hossain made the way for Mominul in the 14-man squad for the first Test beginning August 27, after showing no signs of improvement from an eye infection.Mominul made a vital contribution towards his teams win over England in their last Test at home in October. But form deserted the 25-year-old in away matches after he scored just 138 runs at an average of 23.He lost his place in Bangladeshs last Test match in Sri Lanka, which they won by four wickets to finish the two-match series 1-1.Yet his exclusion came as a surprise considering his record at home, with both leading English language newspaper The Daily Star and New Age questioning the move. The decision could be accepted without objection if it was (taken) in keeping with a consistent policy, the Daily Star said in an opinion piece.Former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam, who currently lives in Australia, expressed his shock on Facebook.Sorry Mominul. Speechless Dont know whether there is any word to console this talented and hard working boy Although I have witnessed so many unjust treatment in my career, I feel this one to be the most terrible one, he wrote.Bangladesh have not played a Test against Australia since Ricky Pontings team visited the country in 2006, six years after they were granted Test status.

Bell rings last orders on Warwickshire captaincy

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former England batting great Ian Bell has taken the drastic step of resigning as Warwickshire captain in order to resolve his lack of runs. The 35-year-old -- who played the last of his 118 Tests against Pakistan in 2015 -- has failed to sparkle with the bat this term as Warwickshire have been mired in a relegation battle from the top tier of the county championship.Bell, who is averaging just 24.64 this season, will be replaced by another former star of the England batting line-up Jonathan Trott for the final five matches of the championship. Its been an absolute honour to lead my home county over the last 18 months and my decision to stand down is something that I have thought long and hard about over a period of weeks, said Bell, who captained them to a one day trophy last year. This is the right time for me to stand down as captain, to focus on my batting and scoring runs, which will be the best thing for the team.As a senior player, I will support the team in all ways possible and I believe that our squad has very exciting times ahead.Bell, whose lack of form led to him being dropped from their T20 side the Birmingham Bears, has scored just one century since the beginning of last season. Its very brave of Ian to make this decision, but one that we fully respect, said Ashley Giles, Warwickshires sports director and a former England and county team-mate of Bells.Having him focused solely on scoring runs for Warwickshire and Birmingham Bears is a huge asset to the club. The team has gone through a transformation period and Ian has been instrumental during this time, leading the team to a trophy at the end of 2016 and helping bring through several of our younger players in recent months, during a difficult period.Warwickshire face a real battle to avoid the drop as they presently lie bottom of the table 31 points adrift of safety.

West Indies' Brathwaite reported for suspect action

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - West Indies Kraigg Brathwaite has been reported for a suspect bowling action during an innings and 209-run defeat by England in the first Test at Edgbaston.Primarily an opening batsman, occasional off-spinner Brathwaite bowled just six wicketless overs for six runs as England surged to a thumping win inside three days in Birmingham on Saturday. The match officials report, which was handed over to the Windies team management, cited concerns about the legality of the 24-year-olds bowling action, said an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement issued Sunday.Brathwaite remains free to bowl in international cricket ahead of the results of a test on his action, which must take place within a fortnight, according to ICC regulations. That means he could bowl when the West Indies bid to level the three-match series in the second Test at Headingley starting Friday. The 24-year-old has taken 12 wickets in his 38-Test career, with half of those coming in a single haul of six for 29 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in October 2015.

Nawaz Sharif not to go abroad, Khawaja Saad denies reports

LAHORE, Aug 20 (APP): Pakistan Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique said former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was not going anywhere and news about his traveling to abroad was baseless.Talking to media at Jati Umra Raiwind here on Sunday, he said Nawaz Sharif was fine and fresh so he was not going to abroad. He said Election Commission of Pakistan had snatched political right of campaign in NA-120 for which the party would go to the court against the decision. He said Raiwind was the centre of politics for PML-N workers so they come here to get guidance from their leader.Talking about the press conference of former Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan, the minister said Ch Nisar did not create any hype in his press conference.Saad said dengue was a chronic issue and even the Sri Lankan doctors had admitted the expertise of the doctors of Punjab in overcoming the dengue in the province. Christian teen held in Lahore for alleged Quran sacrilege

LAHORE (AFP) - A Christian teenager in Pakistan has been arrested and imprisoned for allegedly burning pages of the Holy Quran, officials said Sunday. The incident occurred in the central province of Punjab, with a local police official saying police had caught 18-year-old Asif Massih red-handed.On the night of August 12, police received a complaint that a Christian boy has been found burning pages of the holy Quran outside a shrine, Asghar Ali told AFP.The incident was confirmed by another local police official, Pervaiz Iqbal, who is investigating the case. When the police took the suspect into custody and brought him to a police check-post, a crowd of around 200 men gathered outside...demanding the culprit be handed over to them, Iqbal said.We then secretly moved the culprit to the police station in Wazirabad where he was interrogated and confessed to his crime.Massih was charged under section 295-B of Pakistans penal code, added Iqbal, referring to a part of the countrys constitution that makes the death sentence mandatory for anyone who damages or desecrates the Quran. He will stand trial and faces the possibility of being put to death.Blasphemy is a sensitive charge in the conservative Muslim country, where even unproven allegations can trigger mob lynchings and violence.A Pakistani man was sentenced to death for committing blasphemy on Facebook in June.In May, a 10-year old boy was killed and five others were wounded when a mob attacked a police station in an attempt to lynch a Hindu man charged with blasphemy for allegedly posting an incendiary image on social media. At least 65 people have been murdered by vigilantes over blasphemy allegations since 1990.

400 Viking objects stolen in Norway museum heist

Posted:

OSLO (AFP) - Some 400 Viking objects were stolen from a Norwegian museum at some time over the weekend of August 11-13, the museums director said Sunday, describing the loss as immeasurable. If the stolen objects are not returned, this is by far the most terrible event in the 200 years of Norwegian museum history, the director of the University Museum of Bergen in southwestern Norway, Henrik von Achen, told AFP.The items, most of them small metal objects like jewelry, do not have monetary value attached to them and the value of the metal itself is also quite small, he said.Yet the great and immeasurable loss is connected to the cultural history value of the items, which exceeds the monetary value many times over, he added.Thieves were able to enter the museum on the seventh floor via scaffolding on the buildings facade. The stolen objects had been temporarily placed there ahead of a planned transfer to a more secure location on August 14.The (security) measures were not sufficient, we should have had additional security elements in place, he acknowledged.Norwegian police are investigating the case together with their international counterparts.Meanwhile, the museum was surveying all of the stolen objects and posting photos of them on social media sites so that the items become well-known and hence more difficult to sell and easier to spot, von Achen said.

Afghanistan massacre may account to war crime: UN

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - A United Nations investigation published Sunday confirmed that Taliban and self-proclaimed Islamic State insurgents jointly massacred dozens of people in Afghanistan earlier this month in an attack that may amount to a war crime. The bodys mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said it had verified allegations of at least 36 deaths in the predominantly Shiite village of Mirzawalang in Sayad district of northern Sar-e Pul province. These killings, corroborated by multiple credible sources, constitute violations of international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes, UNAMA said in its report. It added that more than half of the killings took place on Saturday 5 August when civilians tried to flee the village after militants had captured it following a battle with a government-backed militia.Afghan officials claim that Taliban and IS fighters killed more than 50 villagers, including by beheadings, in a rare joint operation between the two insurgent groups. The UN investigation said that as many as 27 civilians were killed, including one woman, four teenage boys and 13 men over the age of 60.Also among the dead were at least seven pro-government militia fighters, one local policeman, and an Afghan army soldier, it added. It was unable to confirm the beheading claims. The UN investigation noted that a commander implicated in the raid had claimed allegiance to IS but concluded it was not aware of any information supporting his links to the wider IS group.Taliban and IS fighters have regularly clashed in Afghanistan over the past two years but allegiances are occasionally fluid and security sources say they have teamed up in the past to strike Afghan forces in certain areas. The Taliban had earlier confirmed capturing Mirzawalang but said it did so alone. It has also denied allegations it had killed civilians.Last week, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for killing 54 Shiites in Sar-e Pul in a statement released by its propaganda outlet Amaq.
