Cook and Anderson pile on agony for West Indies

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Alastair Cooks double century put England in a commanding position against the West Indies before James Anderson struck in the inaugural day/night Test in Britain at Edgbaston on Friday.West Indies were 44 for one in reply to Englands imposing 514 for eight declared, a deficit of 470 runs, when rain ended the second days play early in the third session.Cooks 243, his fourth Test double century, was the cornerstone of Englands total and the former captains dismissal prompted current skipper Joe Root to declare. That left the West Indies with a tricky nine overs to bat in twilight before the tea interval. That was time enough for opener Kraigg Brathwaite to be caught behind for a duck off Anderson.Kieran Powell had made just two when the normally reliable Ben Stokes dropped him in the gully off Stuart Broad. But come the close, Powell was 18 not out while Kyle Hope, in at nought for one, had made a heartening 25 not out for the tourists. But by that stage both Cook and Anderson, Englands leading Test run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively, had struck telling blows.England resumed in an immensely strong position of 348 for three in the first of this three-match series and the 50th Test at Edgbaston.Cook was 153 not out, an innings that had already seen him extend his record tally of England Test centuries to 31.Significantly it was also Cooks first Test hundred in 17 innings and the 32-year-old left-handed openers tenth score of 150 or more at this level.Together with Root, who made 136 after winning the toss, hed put on 248 for the third wicket. There was a sombre start to Fridays proceedings with players, officials and spectators observing a minutes silence in memory of the victims of Thursdays terror attacks in Spain. On the field, Cook again looked to be having a net against an outclassed attack.Malan, who in marked contrast to Cook is appearing in just his third Test, provided steady support during a century stand that took the total beyond 400.His pull off Miguel Cummins, one of four seamers in the attack, saw Malan complete a 112 ball-fifty.Cook then went to his 200 when a misfield by Kyle Hope on the third man rope -- an error symptomatic of a generally sloppy team display in the field -- allowed the ball to trickle through for the openers 30th four in 339 balls. But West Indies did have a success on the stroke of lunch when off-spinner Roston Chase had left-hander Malan caught at slip by Jermaine Blackwood to end a partnership of 162.Cook was 213 not out at lunch. But his chances of surpassing his highest Test score of 294, made against India at Edgbaston six years ago, were effectively undone with a rush of wickets at the other end.Stokes reverse-swept Chase to slip before Jonny Bairstow played on to West Indies captain Jason Holder.Moeen Ali, Englands man of the series in their recent 3-1 win over South Africa then carelessly holed out off Chase for a duck. That left England 506 for seven.Cook, who now had tailender Toby Roland-Jones for company, fell to Chase -- who led the attack with four wickets for 113 runs in 26.2 overs -- when he missed an attempted legside flick. For the second time this innings, the West Indies had to review a not out decision by South Africas Marais Erasmus to get a wicket. But with replays indicating the ball would have hit leg stump, Cooks marathon effort of more than nine hours was at an end.

DHAKA (AFP) - Australias cricket team arrived in Dhaka Friday under tight security for their first Test tour of Bangladesh in more than a decade, officials said.Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury said Steven Smiths men landed at Dhaka airport at 10:50 pm (1650 GMT) under blanket police protection.Since the team landed it was given the security as weve promised. We are confident everything will go according to our plan, he told AFP.Police said some 300 members of elite police units were on guard as the Australians landed at Dhakas Hazrat Shahjahal International Airport.Weve adequate security arrangements at the airport. Weve even cleared the road (leading to the teams hotel), Inspector Moslem Uddin of the Armed Police Battalion told AFP.Australia have not played a Test in Bangladesh since Ricky Pontings team visited in 2006, six years after Bangladesh were granted Test status. They were due to play two Tests in Bangladesh in October 2015 but the tour was cancelled amid security fears after a wave of attacks by Islamist extremists in the Muslim-majority nation.Australia refused to send their team to last years Under-19 World Cup in Dhaka over security worries.Cricket Australia agreed to reschedule the series this year only after Bangladesh promised head-of-state style security for the Baggy Greens.CAs security manager Sean Carroll visited Bangladesh at least three times over the past 12 months to see the security measures before the Australian authorities confirmed the series.Carroll, who is part of the 32-member Australian party, arrived in Dhaka early to ensure everything was in order for the two Test tour. The visitors are scheduled to play a warm-up match on August 22-23 before they take on Bangladesh in the first Test at Sher-e Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on August 27.The second Test will be played at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong from September 4.The Aussies will leave Bangladesh on September 9 after the end of two-match Test series.

Tharanga's Sri Lanka seek redemption against India

Posted:

DAMBULLA (AFP) - Sri Lanka are looking to new captain Upul Tharanga for redemption in the one-day international series starting Sunday against India after enduring a humiliating Test whitewash on home soil.Tharanga will lead the islanders into the opening match of the ODI series in Dambulla, having been appointed limited-overs captain to revive the ailing team after their shock 3-2 loss to minnows Zimbabwe.Angelo Mathews stepped aside as captain after that defeat, vacating the top job to Tharanga who takes the helm at a low point for Sri Lankan cricket, with a form slump and injuries dogging the beleaguered side.Tharanga, 32, has urged fans to be patient, insisting the rough patch will pass for the 50-over 1996 World Cup winners.Sri Lanka have always been stronger in our white-ball format, and I am confident that we will come out strong and beat India, Tharanga said in a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket. We have the talent, we have the skill. We have been putting in the hard work, we just need the spirit, and for that we need your support too, added the left-handed batsman.Sri Lanka have recalled all-rounders Thisara Perera and Milinda Siriwardana. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara and paceman Vishwa Fernando, who were both part of the bowling attack in the Test series against India are expected to make their respective ODI debuts. But the eighth-ranked ODI side do not have history on their side. They were swept aside by India 5-0 in their last ODI series in 2014, and more recently bowed out of the Champions Trophy short-format contest in the first round.India, whose last tour of Sri Lanka in 2015 ushered in a new era of supremacy for the top-ranked Test side, are looking to ride their sweep of Test victories into the shorter-format series. The loss of their Champions Trophy title to arch-rival Pakistan was a bitter pill for India, and the two-time World Champions will be seeking a comeback in Sri Lanka.Newly-appointed ODI vice-captain Rohit Sharma urged his men against becoming complacent, reminding them of their surprise loss to Sri Lanka in the opening round of the Champions Trophy.I have no idea about the squad for this ODI series, but what they had in the Champions Trophy was a very good side. They beat us quite comfortably, said Sharma. So you know in one-day cricket they are a very good team. We just got to do what we have been doing in the past few years. The series offers Indias second line of talent a moment in the spotlight with spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, and pacemen Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, being rested by selectors.Young spinners Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal are expected to make the starting lineup in one or more of the five matches. Uncapped quick Shardul Thakur may also get a look in.India are scheduled to play a lone Twenty20 in Colombo on September 6 after the completion of the ODI series.Squads:Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga (captain), Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella (wicketkeeper), Dhanushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Milinda Siriwardana, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Thisara Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando.India: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma (vice captain), Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ajinkya Rahane, Kedar Jadhav, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.

Spain police say suspects planned bigger attack

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Suspects in Spains twin terror attacks had been planning for an even bigger assault than the deadly car rampages they carried out, police said Friday, as distressing details emerged of families torn apart in the double tragedy.A 35-year-old Italian man was among 14 killed in the attacks, mowed down in front of his wife and young children Thursday in Barcelona when a driver rammed his van through crowds on the busy Las Ramblas boulevard, before fleeing on foot.Police said they shot dead five suspected terrorists who had knocked pedestrians down in the Catalan seaside resort of Cambrils in a second attack in the early hours of Friday, and arrested four others as Spain reeled from the deadly violence.Details of the investigation were still sketchy, but police said the Barcelona suspect driver may have been among the five killed. And according to the daily La Vanguardia newspaper in Barcelona, officers were still on the hunt for four other suspects thought to be involved with the cell that devised the terror project claimed by the Islamic State group.- Bigger plans -In what has been a complex, fast-moving investigation, police revealed Friday afternoon that the suspects had apparently been planning something bigger. They were preparing one or several attacks in Barcelona, and an explosion in Alcanar stopped this as they no longer had the material they needed to commit attacks of an even bigger scope, said Josep Lluis Trapero of Catalonias police. He was referring to a blast in a house in the town of Alcanar Wednesday evening, which police said killed one person.Initially treated as a random gas blast, police later linked it to the Barcelona assault, believing occupants of the house were preparing an explosive device inside and slipped up.Trapero said that after this, the suspects allegedly quickly went on to commit more rudimentary attacks. These involved the vehicles ploughing into pedestrians in Barcelona and Cambrils. The Cambrils suspects had an axe and knives in the car as well as fake explosive belts stuck to their bodies, said police.- High level of coordination -Both Spanish attacks followed the same modus operandi.Drivers deliberately targeted pedestrians with their vehicles, the latest in a series of such assaults in Europe, where cars and vans have been used to lethal effect. The Mediterranean resort of Nice in France was particularly hard hit on July 14, 2016, when a man rammed a truck into a crowd, killing 86 people. But Otso Iho of Janes Terrorism and Insurgency Centre said the Spanish assaults, which stretched out over two different cities, appeared to be a much higher level of coordination than has been typically present in previous attacks. It is also believed to be the first time IS has claimed an attack in Spain. In a poignant moment Friday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, King Felipe VI and the president of Catalonia -- where both attacks took place -- held a minute of silence in Barcelona. It was followed by the crowd applauding and shouting not afraid.- Relatives separated -Details started to emerge Friday on the identity of victims, as did tragic stories of families ripped apart.Witnesses in Barcelona described how the van pushed through the crowd, leaving bodies strewn along the boulevard as people fled for their lives, screaming in panic. We were on the city tour bus, we were 20 feet from the accident when it happened, said Alex Luque, a 19-year-old student from New York.We heard the van and the impact with people and then we saw people running. Then just eight hours later attackers struck in the early hours of Friday in the seaside resort of Cambrils. An Audi A3 car rammed into pedestrians, injuring six civilians and a police officer. One civilian, a woman, later died of her injuries. The police shot dead the five attackers. They also said they had arrested four suspects -- three Moroccans and a Spaniard. There were some three dozen nationalities among the dead and injured, from countries including Algeria, Australia, China, France, Ireland, Peru and Venezuela, according to Spains civil protection agency.Among the dead were at least two Italians, a 74-year-old Portuguese woman, and an American, officials from their countries said.Families posted messages on Facebook looking for lost relatives including one heartbreaking appeal for a missing seven-year-old boy, Julian Alessandro Cadman.- Europes deadliest attack -Spain, the worlds third most popular tourism destination, had until now been spared in the recent wave of extremist attacks that have rocked nearby France, Belgium and Germany. It had even seen a surge in tourists as visitors fled other restive sunshine destinations like Tunisia and Egypt. But it is nevertheless no stranger to jihadist attacks. In March 2004, it was hit by what is still Europes deadliest, when bombs on commuter trains in Madrid killed 191 people in an attack claimed by Al Qaeda-inspired extremists.Spain has also had to deal with a decades-long campaign of violence waged by Basque separatist group ETA, which only declared a ceasefire in 2011.
